Question:

HCG mystery - please help.?

I'll try to keep it short. Miscarried and had D & C over a month ago. I've had my HCG levels monitored. Here are the numbers:

July 23 - 1557

July 31 - 123

August 14 - 25

After my last reading of 25 I waited 3 days and took another pregnancy test since they are sensitive up to 25 HCG and that is exactly where I was at last blood exam. So I figured if I wasn't pregnant again the test would show negative. Since my numbers have fallen so fast I figure they had to have fallen again after 3 days, right? All it would have taken is 1 point and I would have gotten a negative. But 3 days after last blood test I STILL tested positive. My hubby and I have been having unprotected s*x. I ovulated on Thurs. (I'm charting) and we BD the night before I ovulated. If I am still getting positives could it be that my numbers aren't falling anymore?

  1. You can and will have a positive pregnancy test for several days after a miscarriage.  25 is really low, that sudden drop tells me the pregnancy isn't viable.  Sorry.

  2. If you ovulated Thursday, implantation wouldn't have happend yet, therefore no HCG would be produced to be tested by a new baby yet.  I'm guessing it's still showing positive from the miscarriage.  sorry :(

  3. i don't think it would that soon since you usually have to wait 14dpo to test. and the HCG doesnt build up enough in you urine until about 2 days after implantation, which take 6-12 dpo. It's only been about 5 days so i doubt that it's built up in your system already...but for your sake I hope that is the case!

good luck, hope it all works out!!

  4. The pregnancy tests are very sensitive and although you would assume they'd turn up negative they can still be showing a positive reading. It would be too soon for a positive reading to come back on a new pregnancy. I am so sorry for your loss I know how hard it is. Just make sure you allow yourselves time to grieve

  5. Looking at your numbers it would seem that they are falling slower. Between the 23rd and the 31st they dropped by about 1400. Between the 31st and the 14th they didn't even drop by 100. When you miscarry it usually takes 4-6 weeks before your levels reach zero. I noticed with all of my losses there would be a significant decrease and then it would take a few weeks for my numbers to drop all the way down to zero. A general rule of thumb is that after a miscarriage HCG decreases by half every 2-3 days. It would be very possible to still test positive with your numbers only being around 20 or so. While most HPTs say they detect at levels of 25, there are many instances where they detect levels a little lower than that.
