  1. For the first one, make the 5/8 have a denominator of 16, therefore it becomes 10/16.

    10/16 + 3/4x = 1/16

    subtracting it from 1/16,

    3/4x = -9/16

    crossmultiplying gives

    3 * 16 = -9 * 4x

    48 = -36x

    x = -0.75

    The second one is similar:

    Make the x terms have the same denominator, let's say 35.

    14/35x + 20/35x = 1- 3/7

    34/35x = 4/7

    crossmultiplying again

    34 * 7 = 4 * 35x

    238 = 140x

    x = 1.7

  2. (5/8+3/4x=1/16)*16

    5*16/8+3*16/4x=1

    5*2+3*4/x=1

    10+12/x=1

    (10+12/x=1)*x

    10x+12x/x = x

    10x+12=x

    12=-9x

    x=-12/9

    second one is the same way.

  3. Here is the first - you try the second

    first set to a common denominator

    5/8 to get to /16 you need to multiple each number by 2

    3/4 to get to /16 you need to multiple each number by 4

    10/16 + 12/16x= 1/16

    subtract 10/16 from each side

    12/16 x= -9/16

    divide each side by 12/16

    x= -9/16 * 12/9 (to divide, flip the fraction and then multiply numerator and demoninator)

    x = -108/144

    reduce to get -3/4

    Check answer

    5/8+(-3/4*3/4)=1/16

    5/8+ -9/16) = 1/16

    10/16 + -9/16 = 1/16

  4. 1. Multiply by 16.

    10+12x = 1

    Now, transpose and operate.

    12x = -9

    Then, divide by 12.

    x = -3/4

    2. Isolate the variables and the constants.

    2/5x+4/7x = -3/7+1

    34/35x = 4/7

    Multiply by 35.

    34x = 20

    x = 10/17
