What are average 40 times of high school athletes?

I consider myself a pretty good athlete. I've never been the fastest or the strongest but I definitely know how to use my right arm (pitcher and tennis player).

Im just wondering because I've been kinda working on explosive starts and just general movement lately and I'd like to know where I stand with the rest of the field.

4.8 is my best

  1. It varies man. It depends on what type of people are running the 40. here at my school the DB's , Wide Receivers, and Running Backs be in the 4.4-4.6 range. One guy did run a 4.34. I ran a 4.46 ( I play safety and long/high jump in Track). Of course the linemen were slower but it depends on who's running it.

  2. 4.8 isn't bad as far as I know. I was a forward on my hs basketball team and my best was a 5 flat. but the lighter quicker guys would usually get down around 4.7 or 4.8. get down to a 4.4 or 4.5 and you'll start getting some serious attention.

  3. Depends on a number of factors.  Let's compare 2 sports.  At the NFL combine the fastest athletes are usually around 4.2 secs.  An Olympic sprinter is running sub 4.0.

I have done quite a bit of testing for HS athletes and typically they are running somewhere between 4.8 and 5.0.  Before you get excited, our testing methodology was using an electronic timer and coming out of a 3 point stance.  The 3 point stance has been proven to be slower than other stances for the 40 *and* typically handheld times can be up to .2 off from electronic.  I have had kids brag about a 4.5 and we have them clocked at 4.9.  I would say that you are towards the top end but unless they are electronic it is hard to compare one to one.

    Good Luck!
