Anyone who's ever walked around NYC before has definitely passed by at least a few of those Middle Eastern -type food stands where they sell things like lamb and chicken over rice, or kabobs, and things like that. Sometimes theyre called "Halal" stands. My question is, what can I use at home to make that delicious smell that these stands give off?? Anyone know the recipe?? Thanks!

  1. "Halal" has NOTHING to do with food flavors. Halal (halaal) is an Arabic term meaning "permissible". In the English language it most frequently refers to food that is permissible according to Islamic law. In the Arabic language it refers to anything that is permissible under Islam.

In non-Arabic-speaking countries, the term is most commonly used in the narrower context of just Muslim dietary laws, especially where meat and poultry are concerned, though it can be used for the more general meaning as well. This dichotomy of usage is similar to the Hebrew term "kosher".

For instance, McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken chain restaurants in muslim majority Malaysia display the "halal" label/certification in the outlets to assure its muslim patrons that the meats and food served have been certified "halal" by the Islamic board. No pork dishes are ever allowed in halal-certified restaurants.

  2. Halal just means how the islam prepare the food.  Such as the none of the cook ware touched pork...etc.

  3. Try combining corriander, cumin, and fennel seeds in one of those incense burning aromatherapy thingos,or just slow roast them.I bet its what you are looking for..

  4. Not saying you don't know, but just to clarify in case others aren't sure, Halal has nothing to do with what spices are used...it's along the same lines as Kosher.

In Middle Eastern cooking there are many different spices used...you may be smelling cumin and cinnamon in the meat dishes. Those spices are beautiful in the recipes.
