Hamburger rotted over night, why?

We bought some hamburger meat on Tuesday, Wednesday morning it was half red, half brown, Wednesday afternoon, completely brown, and Wednesday night it was entirely gray. Can anyone think of any reason why it would completely rot over night like that?
