Me and my sister are getting 2 Syrian hamsters and we are getting 2 that are already in the same cage at the store. We know that we should only have 1 Syrian Hamster in a cage so thats why we have an extra cage just in case anything happens.

PLEASE DON'T TELL ME NOT TO DO THIS BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY PLANNED OUT AND IF THEY FIGHT WE WILL

REMOVE THEM AS SOON AS IT STARTS.

We would just like to know some resources and tips like advice for our new babies.

We are probably getting them from Petsmart if that helps...

Are these animals for everybody but we think we want them....?

IDK!

What are some personal experiences with them...?

Things like that we would appreciate knowing......

I probably getting a teddy bear but I know its going to be a Syrian.......

HELP!?

  1. go ahead and seperate them if they fight. you can give them treats from your hand to help them get used to you.

i've actually had bad experiences with hamsters, like biting and stuff, so sorry but i don't know the answer to your question. it's ok though, since you don't know the answer to anybody else's questions, you just like to advertise your question on other people's questions instead of just waiting for answers like the rest of us, but whatever...

  2. ok, do NOT put them in the same cge!! its dwarves that this work for! as soon as those syrinnians hit 6 weeks, theyll kill eachother.FOR SURE. they can kill eachothe in like 30 min and theyll prob fight wen ur not home so DONT DO THIS! also, for bedding use either aspen or a paper product such as carefresh NO PINE OR CEDAR!! it will kill them!!

  3. Are these animals for everybody but we think we want them....?

Teddy bear hamsters are mellow and usually well tempered. They make good pets if handled often when they were young. However, they are nocturnal so they won't like being woke up in the middle of the day. In the evening, after all homework is done, though they would be interested in doing something. As long as you are gentle with a teddy bear hamster, it will be gentle back!

What are some personal experiences with them...?

I've owned several Teddy Bear hamsters in the past. They didn't run in wheels, but they loved walking in them so I suggest getting a wheel. Please, don't get plastic. I know they're prettier, but the hamster will pee on the surface, it'll stink, and it's harder to get the stink out. Wire wheels are easier to clean and they don't tend to pee on them as much or at all.

They don't really do that much. Honestly. I mean, you can hold it and watch it waddle around, but they don't learn tricks, do funny things, or make awesome noises. If anything, they'll chirp at you. My hamsters chirped when they wanted attention, I thought it was fairly cute. But if you want a nice, quiet hamster to hold in the evenings, pet, and look after, yeah, they're great.

Things like that we would appreciate knowing......

Like the wire wheel, you might want to know you should NOT get a plastic critter trail hamster cage. They're way too small. Teddy bear hamsters get too big for the tubes and can get stuck in them. If that happens, if not helped soon, they could die.

Teddy bear hamsters like food. Simply put. Feed them sun flower seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables (carrots, apple slices, etc) as occasional treats, but this should NOT replace their normal diet.

They like making nests and it'll be tempting to buy them fluff from the stores. While this is okay, it can get expensive. At home, you can give them unscented: tissues, paper towels, and toilet paper to make their nests with if you really feel like you want to give them anything.

Now, if you're going to keep two in a cage, make sure they are NEVER separated if you want the best chance of them not fighting. I wouldn't suggest keeping two in a cage, but if you insist, get a BIG cage for them.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but here is what happened to my friend and might happen to you. She bought two brothers and for awhile they got along. Everything seemed just fine. Until one claimed the upper side of the cage and the other hogged all the food. It wasn't very noticeable at first. Not until it was too late. One day they started fighting. When hamsters fight, it's not like humans fighting. They fight to the death. The only way you'll end up with two hamsters after they start fighting is if you stick your hand in that mess and pull one out of the cage. Don't think that'll stop them though. My friend had scars all up and down her hand from where she was bit repeatedly. She was bleeding and scarred from that incident. After that, she couldn't bare to take them out and care of them for fear they would hurt her again even though they were separated. Eventually she gave them to me. While they acted fine on their own, they could never be together again.

I really don't think you need to go through that, nor do your hamsters. You could have two cages and you could have one in your room and the other in your sister's room. That way you could each have a hamster of your own even if you helped each other at times.

I probably getting a teddy bear but I know its going to be a Syrian.......

Do it. Teddy bear hamsters are GREAT as first pets and easy to care for. ^^

Feel free to email me if you have any questions, concerns, or comments. ^^

  4. Well, hamsters are terrible pets, first of all.

They hate being held, or really, anything to do with humans.

If they are already in the same cage, however, they will be fine. Is it just the two of them at the petstore? If so, then they should be just fine, because they are already used to each other.

If you think you want them, you might want to do a little more research and make sure that you want them. After all, they live for like 5 years. I have two gerbils that are terrible pets, and (I feel bad), but they just sit around all day and never do anything with humans...

So make sure you know what you are doing before you buy the hamsters....make sure you want them!

    Good luck!

  5. it is ok as long as they r babys bc they can get used 2 each uther p.s. just 2 let u know dont go to pet smart when i wet there were alot of hamsters that were sick! amd the ferrets had to p**p in a small cup!! and there were flys in the ferret cage!

  6. I've had 9 hamsters all together. I had 2 Syrians together who never fought and where mother and daughter. However every other Syrian I've had fought so having a spare cage is a good idea.

I'm now going to say to you what I say to everyone. As much as people say they are perfect starter pets hamsters are not for everyone. Most people tend to underestimate the effort put into training them to become used to you. Hamsters are prone to bitting and when you first try to handle him they will probably bite a lot. First you need to get them used to you being there by talking to them through the cage, as soon as they are used to you being there put your hand into the cage but only a little to see how they will react. If the hamster doesn't act too threatened then put it in a little further. I suggest curling in your fingers to make a light fist because the fingers seem to be prime target. Then when you want to try handling them open the cage door and let them walk out of it. When they are out of the cage let them walk around and then lure them back in with treats and do this several times. Eventually try picking them up to put them in their cage and this is where you'll most likely be bitten so if you want to, use gloves. Never go into a hamsters cage after them because being territorial animals they'll bite yo if you go to much into their area. Always try to call them to the cage door. All this should be done at night when the hamster has woken up itself. Waking a sleeping hamster is practically guaranteeing a bite. Another thing I forgot to mention was that you want to leave them alone in their new home for at least 3 days.

Petsmarts very from store to store on the quality of how they take care of their animals so when going to a petsmart don't only look at the care of their hamsters but other rodents as well.

My experience with all 9 was pleasant. I took very good care of them so aside from the first introductions, they've never bitten me.

  7. Im sorry i really dont know............

    STOP SPAMMING!!!!!

  8. a mouse would be better..They always seem more friendier to me, hamsters tend to bite a lot!!!

  9. If you want to keep the hamsters together but if they start to fight then take them apart quickly. Teddy bear hamsters don't bite when picked up so don't worry about biting. When you first get the hamsters don't pick them up for about 2 days. If you do they will freak out and get wet tail.

Teddy bear hamsters live for about 2-3 years. And if you can inspect the hamsters before you get them. The best thing to do is put your hand in their cage and see which one comes towards you. Try to buy your hamsters later in the day so they are awake. (Hamsters are nocturnal. Awake in the night, asleep in the day!)

    Hope I helped!

  10. Lay down some towels on your bed and let them run around and play with each other. Just make sure they dont jump off the edge.

  11. When they reach maturity (they are likely to be babies if you're buying them from a pet shop) and hamsters will fight to the death. You can't watch them 24/7, you should separate them straight away. Handle them daily to get them used to you, for short periods of time at first and them gradually build it up. If they bite you (which they shouldn't unless badly handled in the petshop) then wear thick gloves (gardening gloves) and continue to handle them until they are happy with you holding them. Where do you live? I work in a pet shop and we have some lovely hammys looking for homes!

  12. I guess u can seperate them

  13. Then why did you reply to my question!?!?!?! IF YOU DO NOT KNOW AN ANSWER DON'T REPLY!!!

    Jezz

  14. DO NOT GET THEM FROM PETSMART!!!! petsmart's rodents have wet tail and disease! my friend has gotten 2 hamsters form there and each had wet tail!

  15. if you are getting them from petsmart, make sure that you get them from the same cage/pen, they can attack. i have gerbils and it takes a lot of work to get 2 unrelated animals bonded. if you have a nipper, each time, blow a puff of air at their noses to get them to stop, this also works with bitters, but it takes them longer to break them of that trait.

also be sure to get a food mixture with 12-16% protein (the numbers are on the back of the bag) you can give them chex cereal, carrot slices, timothy hay, and apple slivers without anything bad happening.

if you have a crittertrail cage you can get tubes to connect the cages easily. DO NOT get the small critterball. mine freak out and they like the larger ones (you can find them cheaper at walmart and they come apart so they are easier to clean). also you can put them in for exercise while you clean out their cage(s)

be sure to pick them up and pet them, talk to them them every day (it will help them become more tame) also hold them while walking around in your house (if they don't recognize where they are, they will look around and not try to jump out of your hands.

try to find a vet that specializes in exotics/rodents/hamsters nearby. there is only one near me and the next closest is over 100 miles away.

  16. u should separate them and give them human contact with them (ex. holding them, playing w/ them) so they dont bite and i dont any games that u play w/ them sorry and i hope this helps
