Im a Staff Nurse, leaving for a Midwifery post and moving 90 miles away for my new post.

I have been accpeted to start on September 1 in my new post. I found out monday. That gives me just 3 weeks to go to move and hand in my notice.

I am required to work four weeks notice.

What can I do???????

  1. have you any holidays you can use that if not you you wont get paid for your last week

  2. As has been mentioned above, if you have holiday owing you could take this, but of course your employer does not have to allow this.

The way that I would approach it is to simply negotiate!!!  If you can hand in your notice this afternoon then do so, even if you're not working today, because at least then you're giving as much notice as possible.  Just outline the situation, tell them that the start date is 1 September, and ask if there's any possibility of you leaving sooner.  *Then* ask about taking holiday as part of your notice period.

I don't know about the NHS, but in the private sector most employers will certainly consider this.  At least you're giving three weeks' notice - it's not like you're just walking out tomorrow.

However, if they are difficult, you've got two options:

    - Just leave anyway.  However, the fact that you broke your contract will be mentioned in your reference (probably), and it's likely that they won't ever hire you again.  Be aware that they could actually sue you for the cost of getting in a temp to cover you, although this is unlikely.

    - Negotiate to start the new job at a later date.  The way that I would approach this is by waiting until at least next week, or even the week after, to discuss with your new Manager.  Why leave it so late?  Well, if you're giving them three weeks' notice that you can't start when they want you to, they may decide to tell you to not bother at all.  However, you give them a shorter amount of notice, and they'll know they can't recruit anyone else in this timeframe, so they'll hold the job open for you.

  3. Apply one week of vacation to the end of your notice.  Give a four week notice but only work the first three weeks.
