Question:

Hard water in shower?

I have a problem with hard water in my shower. It gets to where I have like no water coming out of the shower head. Last time I bought a new one, but I can't keep doing that every couple months. Is there something I can do about this? Someone told me I could clean it out, but how? Do I soak the shower head in something, or is there something you can buy? It was so bad this morning I could barely get the shampoo washed out of my hair.

  1. the head of the shower is metal?

than turn it loose and put it in a water with ca 10% vinegar.

heat the water and vinegar with the head of the shower.

the acid solution wil make the lime ( CaCO3) loose.

    (be careful, its hot)

  2. I live in Arizona with extremely hard water, and I discovered a cleaner a few years ago that I use religiously to clean off mineral scale...it's wonderful.  And if you get a big bottle you can soak your shower head in it overnight and it will help a lot.  Check your local independent hardware store like Ace or True Value:

  3. keep your spare and soak it in vinegar.  Have you consider a water softener?

  4. If you're certain it's the shower head, and not the water lines, clean the shower head (if it's metal).

Remove the shower head and soak it in some CLR for about 20 minutes.  Pull it out of the CLR and rinse it off under running water from the kitchen sink.  Reattach the shower head.

If this is a common problem, you might have to (a) replace the water heater as you might have a lot of sediment in it and/or (b) install a water softner that can be had at home improvement stores.  A water softener is not cheap, but in very hard water areas, it is the only choice.  Hard water makes it harder to clean clothes, destroys water heaters in a matter of a few years, clogs up pipes, shower heads, faucets, and makes you keep buying more items to replace.  A water softener is a few hundred dollars up front of course, but saves you in ways that you wouldn't expect (laundry detergent, automatic dishwasher detergent, new water heaters, etc.)

  5. Soak it in lime scale remover over night , do it regular if your water is that hard

  6. Vinegar to the rescue. Either remove and soak the head or tie a plastic bag filled with it around the head and let it soak.
