My Dutch boyfriend visited Russia 4 times - 1 without me, 3 with me, he liked it a lot. He visited my home town Kazan - 700 km. from Moscow, it's the capital of Tatarstan republic, so population is Russian and Tatar people mixed together. He liked the mix that gives unique style to the city - mosques and churches together, Russian and Tatar culture etc. In summer period he visited our dacha - a country house outside the city near Volga river - he liked it very much, the nature is beautiful, river is near, the weather is good. He also liked the nature when he visited the north of Russia - Novosibirsk city. But if one goes there in winter - one shoulod be prepared to wear many warm clothes because of the low temperature.

He visited also Moscow. Was surprised by the number of drivers that surround you after you came out to the arriving hall at the airpoirt Sheremetyevo-2. They constantly offering their services and in general very annoying (and their prices usually 2-3-4-5 time more expensive than a usual bus that leaves just meters away from the exit).

He found Moscow metro exciting, stations are made in interesting styles but crowd in Moscow metro is overwhelming.

Drivers aren't afraid to die on the road - this is the experience my friend got while watching how they were driving - on a very high speed, breaking the rules etc. Roads are not in good state, with pots etc - in big cities they are ok, but in small towns, especially roads between inner yards. Russians in jams are very impatient and to avoid it they can drive on the pedestrian side or through the inner yards.

If Russian family waits for your arriving then be prepared tht much food and vodka will be on the table - russians like to feed the quests and in general very generous. Toasting with vodka will be obligatory.

There're many modern supermarket chains in Russia - even in small cities.

Houses can look not so nice in color in state, also in the entrances, lifts and between floors. But inside flats it's always clean and rather modern.

In summer period hot water can be switched off for a period.

My friend noticed that russian people are everywhere like on the road - unpatient - so they stand closer in the lines not to let others to get in between and if the public transport comes here all lines break and people rush to get inside especially in the morning and evening rush hours.

He was also surprised with the service, sometimes he got the impression that people of service didn't care for their clients.

What he found difficult - is that everything is written in Russian - in cyrrylic and untill you can't read it and understand a little bit - you will be confused where to go concerning directions and other things.

no, but my best friend is russian and she told me that it's beautiful.

No but I have met some Russian sailors who were very nice.....does that sound as bad as I think it does? LOL

Im not allowed to step foot into Russia again.. it wasn't my fault.
