Have a friend with dyslexia,40+?

he wants know is there any colleges that have support program.that is for a dyslexia adult?also he thinks he too old for this.

My 7th Grade Science teacher had dyslexia.

She got through college easily, even with that disadvantage.

She said that the teachers treated her just like they treated all other students.

But if she needed extra help, there was a certain teacher that aided her and other students.

If he has the paperwork that says he is dyslexic, then public education law says that a meeting can be held to decide what needs he may have in order to complete college. For instance, he may need extra time on tests, he may need explanatory notes from the instructor, he may need the text on tape.  He would need to contact a counsellor at the university who would connect him with the right party to set special plan in place.

all public colleges/universities have to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.  This means they have support programs for student's with disabilities.  Just look into colleges and ask about their disabled student services and what he needs to do to qualify.  He can also check with his local branch of vocational rehabilitation to see if they can help.  He will likely need a current evaluation (unless he's had one within 3 years) that states the nature and severity of his learning disability.

A lot of community colleges have disabled students programs, and they will work with him.  Also, those colleges tend to have A LOT of older students.  I went to one, and we had a woman who was over 70 in my class!  I know another woman who went back at 40, and now she has a master's degree and owns a company with eight employees, AND she had dyslexia, too.

He can also get his books from Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic: www.rfbd.org.  By listening to recordings of volunteers and following along, he can pick up his reading speed significantly in a few weeks.
