  1. Yes, we recently returned from our first trip there in January.  We loved it.  We spent most of the time in Santiago, the capital, and used it as a base for some small side trips to places like Isla de Negra.  We enjoyed the side trips, but there are lots of beautiful places in the world, and these places were, too.  It's just that Santiago turned out to be the real surprise!  It's a modern, clean city that has been designed very well.  You have big, broad avenues and views of the Andes in so many locations.  The food was excellent, most noteably for fresh fruits and vegetables.  (It was summer there.)  If you like seafood, you'll have some wonderful options, too.  Shopping is about as good as it can be.   Good music.  Interesting street life.  Great mass transport.  Seemed safe and well-patrolled, though discretely and without the military feeling you can get in so many Latin American places.   I thought the city had more of a European flare than a South American one.  Cost of travelling were cheap for Americans--an added plus.  There's a tremendous building boom in Santiago right now.  Hard to tell where all the money's coming from, and the Chileans we spoke to didn't know, either.  I'd like to go back in five years and see how it all turns out.

  3. wandered around chile for 10days after aclimbing trip. Pucon is a deadly place a good buz and plenty of adventure day trips in the area. Valdivia is a lovely little place a litle piece of pre ww1 germany. a mate went down to chiloe and said that was well worth a couple of days. stay away from conception though, a bit of a h**l hole. though it is an alright place to stay as a base to explore the surounding area. but definatly stay a couple of days in valdivia

  4. Chile is a most  diverse country with landscapesthat range from vast deserts to variable climates. Santiago, the capitol is beautiful, with much european flavorin its people, archetcture cuisine & the further south you travel the more diverse the climate, terrain,&cultures. My most favoritte areasarein the southern most parts of this wonderously beautiful country, thru the wine making areas, the estancias, the very bottom of Chile  lies many wonderful towns with breath taking views of the Andes, the coastal areas replete with history of whaling & colonies from many european  countries. One of the most awesome sites is Teirra del Fuego at lands end where the Atlantic & Pacific oceans merge from that point south id Antartica. Punta Areanas is Chile's southern most city, it is so awesome, to be there is to feel that you are in a southern european  capital, the people, history, landscapes, culture are indescribaly wonderful, the cuisine of southern  Chile is  a seafood lovers paradise. the quanity & quality ,freshness ofit'sfood is wonderful, Punta Arenas is so worth the time & effort to  go, the prices are most reasonaable, the beauty of it's pristine waters, air quality & genuiness of the residents  make your visit  unforgetable, to go once is to be suprised & delighted, to return is to discover somuch that escapedyou  the 1st time around,I am  soon to return for a  3rd visit,Southern Chile is a still undiscovered  large  scale tourist  mecca, most  foreign  tourists only come  upon  this jewel  as a short stop  on a cruise ship, but many  of  these  cruisers return  for land visits  & trek   to lands end  to see  Cape Horn from  atop a windy bluff, trek thru  the national parks, see the wonderous  sites from the mountains & enjoy the people viewing  while sipping coffee or a glass of great  Chilean wine at a outdoor  cafe  for 1/10th the cost  of   a French cafe. Chile is wonderful, southern Chile is breathtaking,& leaves you saddened when you depart.
