  15.   Reviews: Zelda DS

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, a portable installment in Nintendo's critically-acclaimed action role-playing game, mixes up the Zelda formula a bit, combining the cel-shaded look of Wind Waker with the top-down view of the SNES classic Link To the Past. The game also makes full and interesting use of the DS' two screens, stylus, and on-board mic. Phantom Hourglass is developed and published by Nintendo.

zelda... simply the name makes me want to grab the nearest controller and get on the edge of my seat. unfortunately some things about Phantom Hourglass made me recline a bit as well. while i loved the game's cel-shaded graphics and innovative music choices. i (evidently along with the 1up reviewer) wasn't on-board with the completely stylus-based game play. i somewhat got used to it about half way through the game but the first half almost drove me away. the stylus pen seemed to always be in my way, not to mention my fingers and hand. the idea of drawing on the map to remind you of clues and how interactive you had to be with your DS made up for most of the blocked vision though in my opinion. ex. to blow out torches, you blow into the mic... brilliant. there was also a point in the game where you had to actually close your DS to continue. that was pure genius. all in all, not the best zelda to date but definitely one to get your hands on.

zelda DS is an extraordinary game not only in the handheld world, but matches up to all the zelda franchise and games out today for big consoles alike. surprisingly, i think this actually goes up to the Ocarina of Time standards, which who all know the zelda franchise well, as one of the best Zeldas made. if you got a ds you gotta have Zelda DS. <3   Really intuitive interface

The use of the stylus in this game makes the game memorable and the overall use of the DS's technology justifies the A category in my opinion. The Legend of Zelda is a pretty legendary (and old) series by this point, so innovative gameplay is always welcome. The game really makes excellent use of the stylus and the controls are intuitive and amazingly precise. Honestly, I never remembered Link being such a little ninja before because I had him doing the sword dance all across the screen at times. The puzzles are simple at best and derivative at worst and sometimes the use of the DS interface gets a little old (call me crazy, I just keep forgetting to use the microphone for the candles in some dungeons). I love this game, mainly because it helped me burn away hours of time on the Amtrak home over break.

  16. Love it.

    Zelda freakin' rocks!!!
