Have you tried wild guava?

Have your ever tried wild guava? the trees usually grows out of droppings and the seed throw by human at the road side.

The fruits usually much smaller than the guava we get it the market.

I try many when i was a kid. i like it but cant find the trees anymore in KL.

  2. Yes we had 2 trees behind my parents house. We also call it jambu batu. Our neighbour also has one behind their house. The one that we have was the white flesh, my neighbour has the pink flesh. I would sapu the whole lot. But then we moved out to a new house far away and i never see such jambu batu again.

    Whenever any of my siblings get constipation, my mother would pick the young leaf and constipator gotta swallow them. I dont know if it worked coz i never gonna wait around to know now would i...

    Yeah.. i miss that jambu batu. Its diferent than the ones in the market. But if u drive around village area, u might stumble upon one. Then you should get the fallen seed and plant it perhaps.

  3. u refering to the jambu batu that looks like flower? its pink in colour.. usually i eat with black soy sauce and sugar .. very nice.

    Barney Cakeman: its the kicap masin (brand: cap kipas udang) hehhe .. u dip the jambu in the kicap and with gula(or mix them both).. its very nice u should try it ..(my grandma's recipe) i donoe if others use that combination too?

  4. Wild guava is susceptible to fungus, insects and nematodes etc. That is maybe why you have difficulty finding it.

  5. my parents house at kampong in old days used to have this "jambu tree"..

    i miss the taste of this small hard guava fruit with lots of seed in it..

    but anderson if u go to kampong areas, i'm pretty sure u can find this jambu again.. & it can also be found at kampung pasar malam.

  6. oh my goodness..this brings back memories..yes i had them at my parents house in Kuala Pilah....we had 2 kinds. 1 was red inside and the other type was whitish yellow....i too would dig the seed with the spoon and just eat the skin..yummy....and the unripe ones, i would make kicap (ketchup/black sauce) + sugar sauce and dip the jambu inside and eat...whoa !!!!! very nice...... sad i cant find those now as well...

  7. Have tried it many times when i was a kid but nowadays like you said, very hard to find. Yeah, it's called 'batu' because the thing is very hard, like stones. need to wait until very ripe, then only you can eat it. The taste is lil a bit bitter

  9. Yes. I know the guava you meant.

    Its in pale green in color and is soft at the inside, hard at the outside. And it has a lot of seeds in it.

    There are two kinds of guava - one is with the white flesh and with pink flesh (both covers with green skin).

    They are sweet when they are really ripe. I put them in the fridge for a week day before i enjoy them.

    It is good to have Guava fruits because they are rich in Vitamin C and prevent constipations.

    These guava fruits are selling in the pasar malam. Try to find it in nearby night market.

  10. ya...i remembered... when i was a kid we used to have this variety grown wild by the roadside and my school garderner grow them too... im not sure if we call it jambu batu coz i think jambu batu is the big green guava they usually sell fresh-cut whereas this one is smaller (about the size of a mangosteen) and tastes so much sweeter.  Maybe they're of the same family but of different species.

    i remembered how me and my friends would sit on the branches (i was a tomboy as a kid) and munch on the jambu.  its flesh is pinkish when its ripe and we don't usually eat the pit / middle part coz its laden with the tiny seeds.

    gee...thanks for making me remember those sweet childhood memories...  too bad the jambu tree is not there anymore coz it got infected with some sort of a bug and died..poor jambu tree...

    i also remembered how i got chased by the nuns (i went to mission school) for stealing the jambu in the school garden... and got spanked on the bonbon.... hahaha LOL i miss those days...

    i love my jambu...
