Question:

Having problems serving?

My problem is that I can't get power and the ball to drop in the service box. I feel like im pronating at the right time and everything but it's one of two outcomes, it either hits the top of the tape or goes long? It's so frustrating. My second serve is okay so I can get away with using it because my forehand and volley is also strong, but I want to use my second serve as a second serve, not my first. What can I do?

  1. if you have the tennis channel, there is a short tennis drill on serving. look for it.   also, watch some videos of pete sampras.    also, make sure you hit the ball after you pronate

  2. when I had problems with my serve a few weeks ago I did a Google search for serve, and found a great website videojug.com   There, you can see great intructional videos on the serve, as well as all the other strokes.       My serve used to be pretty good, had gotten poor, but now with videojug, it's back where it needs to be.

  3. Is it a height issue? I'm relatively average height at 5'10, but taller people generally tend to have an easier time with their serve due to the easier angle. What you can do it toss a bit higher, bend your legs and explode up and toward the ball. The legs are one of the most important components of the serve. Also on the wind up you want your right shoulder to dip down well below your left shoulder. Make sure you're using a continental grip and give it a good wrist snap.

The toss is also very important, make sure it up in front of you (if you don't hit the ball, the ball should land about a foot infront of the baseline). If you find yourself hitting lots of balls into the net. After you make contact with the ball, keep looking up at the blur that is your racquet. People have a tendency to look across and follow the ball and when you do that you prematurely turn your shoulder.
