Question:

Hawthorn still number 2? Why?

Hawthorn won on Sunday against Richmond by 12 points, and they scored 109 points, but on ANZAC day, Geelong won by 1 point against Fremantle and they scored 89 points. Why did Hawthorn only gain 0.3% of percentage and still in position 2? I find this very puzzling... thanks!

  1. caus they sucks

  2. % that's the only reason if the Hawks had a higher % they would be on top

  3. it all depends on the for and against for the season not per game, if that's the percentage then that's the percentage,

its 'for' multiplied by the 'against', try it on a calculator, its the formula.

  4. It about how many points were scored for and against as well. I only have Sunday's paper but at that stage Geelong was 706 For and 483 Against where Hathorn at that stage were 612 For and 421 Against this is where our percentage is lower and we only gained 0.3%.

I think that is how the Maths work, but they may take other things into it as well but I do not think so.

  5. becoz they havnt got as many points or whatever as geelong.

  6. It's just the way the world should be, Hawthorn will always be second best (at best)

  7. If both teams are on equal points then they work out the percentages based on the accumulated points the team scored in each of their games divided by the accumulated points scored against them.

Geelong for the 6 games they have played they scored 706 points and conceded 483 points (points scored against them). Percentage wise its 146.16% (706/483)

    Hawks scored 718 and conceded 515 - 139.41%

    WB scored 804 and concede 578 - 139.10%

    .

  8. Direct Answer: Because Hawthorn's Percentage is still Lower than Geelong's.

Why is that after the results of these clubs' respective matches?

    Well...

In AFL Footy, 'Percentage' is used to decide the (ladder) position of clubs on the same number of points (not necessarily wins).

When clubs have more for than against the percentage is >100% and when clubs have more against than for, percentage is <100%. When for & against is equal, percentage = 100% approximately. Percentage is always rounded to two decimal places.

    ----

Percentage is worked out by ...

    "points for/points against*100"

So, in the Case of Geelong after 6 rounds played, for example

    For - 706 Against - 483

(and with a little help from our good friend - mr calculator)

    706/483=1.461697722 blahblahblah

    answer*100=146.17%

    ------

Why you're puzzled is maybe the fact that a team can WIN a match and still LOSE percentage. This happens when a team  wins by less % than their current percentage.

(and vice versa - it is possible for teams who lose to gain percentage.)

    For example

    Hawthorn @ Round 5 - For 612 Agst 421

    612/421*100 = 145.37%

    (Round 6 Haw 106 d Rich 94 - 106/94*100 = 108.51%)

    Hawthorn @ Round 6 - For 718 Agst 515

    718/515*100 = 139.42%

so despite their win against the Tigers, Hawthorn actually lost percentage. So did Geelong of course.

another point... the higher the score, the less the percentage is for equal margins..

for example, say Geelong 7.9.51 Defeats Hawthorn 7.8.50 then the percentage from the match (for the winning team) would be:

    51/50*100 = 102.00%

but the next time the play Hawthorn 23.13.151 defeats Geelong 23.12.150  "     "     "

    151/150*100 = 100.67%

  9. The percentage is based on every points margin of every win and loss during the season, not just the points margin from one particular round of football. So the fact that the Hawks won by more this week and Geelong won by less would only come into play if it was Round 1 of the premiership season. Obviously when you add up how much Geelong has beaten each of their opponants by so far, it adds up to more than how much the Hawks have beaten their opponants.

  10. I still rate Geelong better than the Hawks by a bit at the moment

  11. Percentage.

  12. i really dont know i thought that we would have better percentage 2 but we actually lost points

  13. booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

it sucks the hawks should be on top
