Hd dvd down converting Question?

im borrowing a friends hd dvd and i do not have a hd dvd player but i do have one that upconvertes regular dvds, can my player down convert an hd dvd? I have a sony bravia and philips hts3555, when i put the disc in it says no disc

You can't play an HD DVD disc without an HD DVD player.

(Same applies to Blu-Ray discs as well).
