  1. writersblock73 is generally correct, except for a couple of points with regard to using a separate sound system with A/V receiver.

    1) You can get A/V receivers that accept HDMI inputs and output HDMI to your TV.  They will take the sound signal from the HDMI and give you full Dolby 5.1 surround.

    2) If you have a sound system without HDMI inputs, then use coax or optical directly from the PS3 to the A/V receiver, and HDMI from the PS3 to the TV.  In general, TVs will not pass-through the digital audio from external HDMI inputs to their digital audio outputs (those output only work with the internal TV tuner).

If you do use a separate audio system, disable the TV speakers.

  2. All you need is the hdmi cable. Hdmi carry's both sound and video.

  3. All you need is a $4 HDMI cable like the one I use...

  4. It depends on how you want to handle your sound.  If you're only going to use the television's speakers, all you need is the HDMI, since HDMI transfers both video and audio information.

If you'd like to route your sound to an amplifier (say, a surround sound system), then you can use the HDMI for video to the televison while hooking a digital coax to the amplifier.  Or--if your television supports it--hooking the PS3 via HDMI to the television, and your television's audio to your amplifier.
