I got laid off a couple weeks ago and I have Cobra to continue my insurance but it's a little pricey.

Do you know any other options? I don't have health problems

  1. I suggest a company called ameriplan.  they are cheep and they will not turn you down due to age or illness.  and it will cover everyone in your home.

  2. Go to a local, independent agent, to get some quotes for health insurance.

Don't drop the Cobra, until the new policy is in force.

  3. Blue Cross Blue Shield has a good comprehensive medical plan, especially if yu don't have health problems. Or look in the yellow pages under Health Insurance and an agent will come to your home. I would compare three different companies before deciding.

  4. There are lot's of options on the open market for individual health insurance, depending on what state you live in. Save yourself the brain damage of sorting through them on the internet - call a local agent.

If you obtain your own individual health insurance consider keeping it, even if you get a new job that offers you group coverage. The advantage is that you own the policy, not your employer.

  5. The options available for your situation vary by state.  I suggest that you contact a local health insurance broker to discuss your options.

  6. Most companies will not accept you on a permanent policy if you are unemployed. The reason for this is the insurance company knows you are probably looking for employment and will possibly get a job with health benefits. It can take a company 6 to 8 months to recoup the cost of issuing a policy.

If you don't have any pre-existing conditions you should look into getting a short term medical policy. These policies are designed for people in your situation. They don't have all the bells and whistles of a permanent plan but they will cover well for catastrophic illness or accidents. The premium is very reasonable. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can explain how these plans work and can find the best one for you. There is no extra charge using an agent.

Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed nor insured. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/wes... for more information. Many other states are starting to ban these cards as well.
