  1. Breakfast wholegrain cereals with fresh fruit andsemi skimmed milk

or boiled egg and wholemeal soldiers plus fruit juce

scrambled egg on toast plus fruit juice

    Snacks and lunches

    Chicken salad sandwich

    Ham salad sandwich

Pitta bread with spicy chicken and salad and salsa

    Fresh fruit (Bananas are filling)

    small bag of dried fruit

    small carton fresh milk

    Beans on toast

Toast with marmite (vegemite) or low fat cheese spread

  2. Make a batch of steel-cut oats in the early part of the week (not the instant oatmeal that comes in the packet with all the additives).  Then you can quickly heat servings as you need them.  Add fresh fruit, and a little bit of brown sugar, honey, and/or cinnamon, and you have a quick, healthy breakfast.

You can also make scrambled eggs with cheese very quickly.  I have one of those little Magic Bullet blenders, and all you have to do is crack open a couple of eggs, shredded cheese, mushrooms, spices, bacon bits, vegetables, or whatever I want to mix in with the eggs.  I toss everything in, pop the cup on the blender base, and everything is chopped up, mixed, and ready to go in seconds.  Then all I have to do is pour the contents into a heated pan, cook the eggs, and they are ready to eat.

Fruit and yogurt/Kefir smoothie.  Again, the little blender is great for these.

As for lunches, focus mostly on lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables, and some kind of dairy.  Some things that I regularly make for my son include:

Whole wheat pita with turkey or chicken breast.  You can also add hummus spread and sprouts if your children like those, for additional protein and vitamins, or sliced cheese, tomato slices, lettuce, or whatever else they like.

Whole wheat crackers with turkey or chicken slices and cheese.  They can make their own little mini-sandwiches.  You could also use peanut butter (if your school allows peanuts).

    Grape tomatoes

Broccoli Bites (raw or lightly steamed)

    Baby Carrots

    Celery Sticks

    Whole grain Goldfish crackers.

Fresh fruit (whatever your kids like--grapes, apples, peaches, bananas, orange slices, etc.)

Organic Yogurt Tube (I love the Stonyfield Farm yogurt tubes)

Organic Milk Box (Horizon Farms makes these, and you can buy them by the case at most grocery stores)

100% Juice Box (Juicy Juice, Mott's, Minute Maid--anything but the fake "sugar water" juice like Hi-C, etc.).

Try to get a balance in there, choosing an "entree," a vegetable, a fruit, and a beverage every day.  If you want to pack "Real Dessert" (as my son calls it), pudding cups or graham snacks are good choices--it gives them something sweet, but without too much sugar or artificial additives.

Snack options for your teens can be much of the same.  Make sure there are plenty of healthy, ready-to-go snacks on hand.  Keep fresh fruit in the house at all times, keep fresh vegetables cut up and in the refrigerator (you can store them in Ziploc bags with a little bit of water), healthy drinks (ice cold water, milk, fruit and vegetable juices), Lean cold cuts, yogurt, Babybel cheeses, whole wheat crackers, and so forth.

  3. Oatmeal, low sugar cereals, turkey bacon and eggs. It depends on what they will eat. For lunches just try and balance the food with the 4 food groups, ex. a peanut butter sandwich, some fruit and maybe carrot sticks then they can get the milk at school (you usually have to pay for it though). For snacks, fresh fruit, veggies like carrot sticks, celery, raisins, pretzels, trail mix, if you buy the pretzels or trail mix just look at the nutrition labels and make sure they don't have a lot of sugars and calories.
