  1. I always take the Underground into London.  If I've got luggage with me, sometimes I'll take the Bus (National Express).  All other methods are quite pricey.

The bus is a bit quicker, and you don't have to worry about transfers.  When taking the bus, I will usually take it to Victoria Station, which isn't too far from the main tourist area of Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey.

If you take the Underground, you will take it to Paddington Station, then transfer to whichever station you want to go to.

  2. The tube.  It takes 2 hours to reach Central London from Heathrow.

The tube is probably the cheapest. Look into the day pass options for the subway system. They can pay for themselves with a couple hops.

Heathrow is about 15 miles west of the central area of London where most visitors want to go. There is a myriad of transfer options available.

There will be an underground station very near your central London destination. Downside is chronic crowding of the carriages which can be stressful and uncomfortable if you have lots of luggage after a long flight.
