  1. Yep. Pilot error is a factor in 85% of aircraft accidents. Some day we'll get humans out of the cockpit and save some lives. Could do it today actually but the public wouldn't buy it. They will  some day though.

  2. Of course it cld have been avoided. But unfortunately 121 people lost their lives. Apparently some of the families are suing Helios, no mount of money will ever bring those fathers, mothers, children, friends, co-workers back. And still Cyprus mourns the loss of these innocent victims.

  3. Logic would say that it should be avoidable for all the reasons mentioned by other posters.  On the other hand, there have been other instances of accidents caused by loss of pressurization - the Payne Stewart Lear Jet crash and the crash of a Cessna Conquest carrying the LSU football coach come immediately to mind.  This type of accident seems to have some particularly insidious traps.  Just a thought - probably muddies that waters more than clears them.

  4. it could've been avoided for sure.

for one thing, when ATC told the pilot to check the bleed air valve position, the pilot cut the guy off and asked for the location of his air conditioning breakers. he lost consciousness after he went behind his seat to the breakers.

if the maintenance people had returned the switch to its proper position, as per regulations, everything would've been fine.

if the flight attendant, (i forgot his name) who had some flight training and wanted to become a pilot had attempted to land somewhere, the whole flight wouldn't of crashed like it did from fuel starvation, killing everyone on board. had he simply just descended, some people would've reawakened, and strong chances are that the pilots would be of those people. he could've also descended and then gave the pilots oxygen to revive them.

he was the only conscious person on board at the time of the crash. he was using the oxygen from those little oxygen bottles for the flight attendants. he was the one that the F-16 pilots saw in the cockpit.

  5. When an aircraft depressurizes, you know it instantly.  Your ears hurt and the cabin fills with fog.  The 737 also has a warning horn that sounds when there is a loss of cabin pressure.

The thing is, you only have a few seconds of useful consciousness since the oxygen is forced out of your lungs.  Quick donning oxygen masks are required for airline pilots but know their location proper use is vital within a few seconds of losing cabin pressure.

  6. Never ask if they could have been avoidable, but ask who's fault was it....

Most airplane crashes can be avoided because most of them are pilot error...

    My answer it yes.
