  1. The Canon Rebel is definately bigger and MUCH BETTER than the Nikon s3. I would go into a store try them out and see what you prefer...

  2. The Canon Rebel takes interchangeable lens. The Nikon S3 lens is built in.  The Nikon S3 is a point and shoot camera while the Canon Rebel is a DSLR. You will gain more control and understanding with a Canon Rebel (DSLR) than you will with your Nikon S3 (point and shoot).

  3. There's a reason for those better pictures...a better camera! :)  If you go with the Canon Rebel XT, XTi, or XSi (their newest), you'll be getting a DSLR.  Which means it'll cost more, because of the separate lenses.  The XT will be the cheapest, since it's the oldest DSLR.

But the reason the pictures are better is because a DSLR has a bigger sensor, and can capture and retain more of the information coming in to the camera.  If you choose to have the pictures saved as RAW files, you'll retain even more of the information.  To use those does take specialized software, since RAW isn't standardized yet.

One of the bigger differences to look at is if you want something you can slip in your pocket, or if you're willing to carry around a pretty much dedicated camera bag.  The Rebel won't fit in a pocket...even the pocket of the largest pair of pants you can find!  I have the Rebel XT, but got the Canon G9 (a high-end P&S) just for this reason.  The XT is too bulky and heavy to carry around a lot.  So...if you do go for a Rebel, don't ditch the P&S.  They come in handy.
