I have a US passport and travel to Mexico all the time.

My friend has a Thai passport, a US driver license, and a green card. She can walk over to Mexico on a visit, and come back just fine. Right?

Her friend has an Arizona ID, and old style green card (no photograph). She has a Thai birth certificate. She is married to a US citizen. She only recently obtained her US citizenship (weeks ago), but has no passport. What can she do? None of the web sites are clear on that.

  1. US Citizens and permanent residents are now required to have a valid US Passport for any and all travel outside of the US and its territories.  The best thing to do is call the Passport office directly and ask them what, if any, additional documentation you need to obtain before traveling.  Since your friend that has an Arizona ID is now a US Citizen they will absolutely require her to have a valid US Passport.  As for your friend that has a Thai passport, that's where you'll want to talk to the Passport office and find out what the procedure is.

  2. Why doesn't she have a passport?  She needs to get one.

  3. Hi, I'm sorry I don't have the answer to you question, however, you can call one of the border crossing stations, in Mexico, and ask what the requirements are for entering.

Hope that helps, I've done it before.

  4. well since she just became a US citizen she is def. a US citizen now so the new rule that's in effect states that ANY US citizen has to have a passport. So, if she gets a passport she will be fine.

  5. It IS clear.  She needs a passport.
