  1. Don't throw anything away until you have tried this.  Heat will kill bed bugs. The apartment complex where my son works uses heat. The literature varies with the stated temperature needed, but try heating the infected space, maybe with electric space heaters, to at least 130 degrees F, for at least three hours. Some literature suggests 155 is better.

You might drape any windows to keep them from expanding too much from the heat. They could crack.

If you live in an apartment, show this to your landlord. It will be much cheaper than calling in the exterminator, and probably more effective. He might be happy to do it for you.

  2. If you’ve positively identified your problem as a bed bug infestation, it is time to sanitize the affected areas. If you can spare money for another mattress it would be a good idea to throw your old one out. If you can’t afford another mattress, vacuuming the mattress and applying a sealable cover should be sufficient. Meanwhile, all clothes, linens, and bedding should be washed in hot water, and the immediate area vacuumed thoroughly.

Insecticides are not an option to get rid of bed bugs, because insecticides should never be applied to an area where you sleep. Sticky traps, like those used for mice, are a good way to capture rogue bed bugs that have managed to escape your domestic exorcism. Some insecticides like Boric Acid might be used in areas around the bed, but never on the mattress itself.

  3. Well, insecticides wouldn't be the best idea because you too are sharing the bed. Sticky straps, like those used to catch ants and flies would be a good idea to place around your bed.

Also, its probably best to clean your carpet. They can spread :p

Methods that won't work: freezing them out. while freezing temperatures may slow their spreading, it will NOT totally knock them out and Bug Bombs will NOT work.

Once rid of the bugs, you can place a mattress seal cover on your mattress to prevent future infestation.
