Help!!!! Onion Rings?

I made some onion rings the other day and I used pancake mix for the batter. They were pretty good but how can I make them better? Do you know of any great recipies?

Also, I'm looking for more of a crunch than what I get with the pancake batter. Crunchy like...IHOP's Yum. :)

Thanks.

  1. I always mix in about 1/4 in cornmeal of the amt of pancake batter - so 1 cup of pancake mix to 1/4 cup cornmeal.  slice and separate - then put in the freezer til they are really chilly - even ice crystals.. then dip in milk/egg mix and put in dry mix to coat well and drop into hot oil.

Mix will stick to the rings better and fry up crunchier.  :)  Good luck!

  2. soak the onions in milk first for 20mins

use plain flour eggs and sparkling water for the batter mix dont let it stand, use it straight away

  3. Use my fish batter and follow the instructions with your onion rings.

    Batter for Fish.

Soak fish for 25 minutes in salted water.

Whisk 2 egg yolks and stir in 1 cup self rising flour, cold water, salt and pepper.

    Mix all together.

Beat 2 egg whites until stiff, fold into flour mixture.

First dip fish into flour, then into batter, then into flour again and into batter again.

Fry in oil until golden brown.

  4. Fat Ronnie's Fried Onion Rings

    2 cups. Flour

    1½ tsp. Salt

    1 tsp. Ground Pepper

    ½ tsp. Baking Powder

    1 cup Buttermilk

1 Large Sweet Onion (sliced 1/2" wide)

    Vegetable Oil for Deep Frying

Place buttermilk in one bowl and set aside. Mix flour, salt, pepper, and baking powder in separate bowl. Heat oil at 375ºF for frying.

Dredge onion rings in flour mixture first, then dip in butter milk and then coat with flour mixture again. Place onion rings in hot oil and do not crowd onion rings. When onion rings are golden brown remove from oil and drain. More salt may be added to your taste.  These were traditionally served in a brown paper bag from the Topeka, KS, location.

  5. I prefer to use a beer batter when making my onion rings.

You mix beer (I use new castle) with AP flour until it is a thin pancake batter consistency then add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and salt and pepper. For added flavor I grate parm cheese over then onion rings when they come out of the fryer. The texture is light and crispy and has so much flavor.

  6. Dairy Queen Onion Rings

2 Vidalia or Texas 1015 onions, sliced 1/2-inch thick

    2 cups flour

    2 cups fine cracker crumbs

    2 cups white cornmeal

    2 cups buttermilk

    1 cup Water

    4 cups Crisco oil

Save the very small onion rings for another use.

Add buttermilk and water to a large bowl.

Mix together flour and fine cracker crumbs in another bowl. Coat one ring at a time with flour mixture, then with buttermilk mixture, and then coat with cornmeal. Drop into hot oil and fry until golden. Drain on white paper towels.

  7. You can use regular flour and season with salt and pepper. First dip them in water (for a lower calorie onion ring), or dip them in eggs (beaten), first then dip them in the flour mix, and deep fry.

OR...they do sell "Onion Ring mix" where you get the taco seasonings, burrito seasonings, gravy mixes, at the grocery store. Find that isle and that section, and you'll find the onion ring mix.

I just saw SUGAR PIE's answer and I would suggest using her idea!!! In fact, I'm going to try it myself. Sounds more YUMMY!!!  :)
