Help With Tortoises.?

Question

Hi, I have 3 Tortoises, A Male Herman's, A Female Russian, And A Female Leopard. The Herman's attacks the Leopard, but not the Russian. Why is this, and is it dangerous to keep them together? Thanks.

its not a good idea, especially to have more than 1 female with the male. i think (from what ive been told) that the male will hoose only 1 female.

He might want to mate with her, other tortoises  ( i've noticed ) are more fond of a different species, it could be a mating ritual, or a territory problem.

obviously if there attacking each other seperate them or get a bigger cage

It's pretty dangerous to keep them together because of territory issues. The Herman's, if it's the first to attack is a male. Male's are territorial, so I can easily see that happening. Also, did you get the Leopard at a later time after the Herman and Russian? If so, the first two might have already claimed territory, or been together a while. If you got the Russian and Herman at the same time, then they were brought to the same area and both now have settled there agreements male or not. The Leopard now has no territory, and has to fight for it. It's pretty dangerous housing different species together, especially if you got them at different times. Hope I could help.

http://www.tortoisetrust.org/care/faq.ht... here is a site that will explain to you why you should not mix the different types of tortoise, but what is happening at the moment is you male herman is seeing the leopard girl as a threat, she is going to be bigger than him and he knows she is not the same as he is so see's her as a threat, he is nice to the russian as she is of similar size to him and he see's her as his girl (even though they will never produce viable eggs if they mate) you need to provide a separate pen for the leopard they have totally different care needs to a russian and herman, but the problem you may have is the russian may not except the herman as a mate and he will harass her this can lead to stress with the russian and that is bad for her, you really need to sort out separate pens for them before he causes any harm to the girls, it could reach a stage where it is dangerous for the russian to stay in the same pen as the male, you really need to do some research before any more harm is done and get the leopard out of the enclosure before he really does some damage to her, it is dangerous for her to be in there, hope you get it all sorted  best of luck honey.

Yes it is dangerous to keep them together. Different tortoise species carry different diseases which they can easily pass to each other. Leopards also have very different nutritional requirements and environmental requirements. Hermans and horsfields have similar diets but still shouldn't be mixed. To me its clear you haven't researched the needs of your tortoises properly at all. And you have a lot of making up to do. I think you should split your tortoises up immediately. You can easily make them a tortoise table each. Join this forum, there's lots of friendly accurate advice on housing and diet. Good luck
