Help diagnose 1978 johnson 175 seahorse?

had boat in storage. after bringing home tilt and trim will only trim up; when trying to trim down it acts bound. any ideas? professionals only please respond.

  2. 1978 only has one solenoid relay.

    An easy way to test if it is binding - release the valve at the base of the starboard side clamp bracket.  It'll be a slotted s***w, recessed near the bottom side.  Unscrew it about 1 full turn and then push down on the motor if it doesn't go down by itself.  If it won't go, then you may have corrosion or an internal issue to the pump that won't allow the hydaulic fluid to pass.

    You can also bypass the forward switch and the solenoid box by disconnecting the trim unit at the plug.  Then you can hotwire it directly to localize the issue using a 12V battery and some wire.  If memory serves, blue is down, green is up and the third wire is ground.  If it works with everything else disconnected you'll know it's not the unit itself.
