Help growing a date palm?

Question

I have a date palm which is in a fair sized pot, I trimmed the base leaves off to allow it to 'fan out' and let more leaves grow but it never seems to do anything. I water it, it's in a good position but it just seems dormant. Has anyone any tips, please?

I know palm's are like catus, they need very little water! if that helps.
