Help me fix my phone?

Hi. It's a house phone with multiple recievers that were working just fine. Now you can turn it on and get a dial tone. But you can't dial any numbers on it. All the buttons work but it just doesn't dial through to get it to ring. Then the machine comes on and says either "If you'd like to make a call...." or "Welcome to AT&T...." . We have another phone in the house with 2 recievers that is working just fine. What went wrong and how do you fix it? Thanks in advance

If you are getting dial tone but can't break dial tone it could be a number of different problems.  Most likely your dial pad is defective.  On older phones the dial pads could get dirty or were polarity sensitive and if the telephone line was reversed you couldn't break dial tone.  Try switching it with a known working phone to narrow the problem down.
