guys, im planning to go for a laptop, n i jus wana knw hw gd is d new 'intel centrino 2'? n ya wht company notebook should i prefer in India for d same? please help me out

You can try browsing LaptopExperts.net and see if you come across any systems that you want to rule out based on performance, and see which ones perform well for the tasks that you need the laptop for. I'd say definitely shop around and check out various sites and forums online.

I use  toshiba satellite with the AMD Turion.  If you are ever thinking about playing any sort of game on your laptop, I would recommend getting the AMD. It does not share video resources, and it makes it much easier to play them.  It is also a good deal. You can get the base model at Best Buy for around $500...

The Centrino 2 platform does have a good processor (Core 2 Duo or Solo, the best dual and single core laptop processors), chipset (and the integrated graphics of the G45 and G47 are actually quite decent although the P45 with a proper graphics chip will give better graphics performance) and wireless card although it's also the more expensive platform.

The older Intel platforms (Santa Rosa Centrino and the few Napa laptops out there) are themselves pretty good although the i965GM's GMA X3100 isn't anywhere near the performance of the GMA HD4500 of the G45 (of course the laptops with dedicated graphics usually perform better).

AMD laptop processors are cheaper than Intel processors but slower at the same clock speed while using about the same amount of power, they are still pretty d**n good and if you're trying to save money are quite acceptable, just beware of the aTi and nVidia integrated graphics chips that typically appear in AMD processor laptops (many of which are worse than the Intel chips), whilst an aTi or nVidia graphics chip in a laptop with an Intel processor means it has dedicated graphics the same can not be said for AMD processor laptops so if you want to play games you have to actually find out how well the graphics chip performs.

I haven't seen any decent statistics on laptop reliability by brand and I doubt those telling you to buy or not buy a specific brand have much to base their recommendations on (personal experience is notoriously unreliable) so brand probably doesn't matter all that much (and most of them outsource manufacturing to other companies anyway) although all brands produce bad models, a quick google search of the model you're looking at should give you an idea of whether it is trouble prone or generally reliable.  Getting a three year warranty is a good idea since laptops tend to be expensive to fix outside of warranty.
