Big Evil - Wow - lots of questions here - mind-searching and deep.  Would take for ever to respond appropriately.  Your query seems quite philosophical, but does not indicate where you are coming from purpose etc. Therefore difficulty to assist you.

My brief answer would be - albeit most probably not what you are looking for, so sorry in advance:

Life combines a variety of 'requirements' for individuals to succeed. Everyone is different based upon their starting point, life experiences, opportunities etc.  Therefore there is no blanket answer to the above questions.

The whole of life is a learning curve - and one in which we ought to participate to do the 'learning', from others and from personal experience.   I think it pointless to test one's ability to become an adult; it's going to happen whatever.  What we can affect is the maturity aspect by developing knowledge of ourselves, our skills, aspirations, ability to develop and learn alongside others.

Earning money along the way is just a route to provide us with what we perceive as our needs. Everyone has different expectations, and our starting points range according to a variety of factors - poverty versus given wealth.  

What makes a difference to us all are the driving forces in our lives, along with the opportunities available.  

As for feelings about death - well, simple - it's going to happen, and hopefully following a long and happy life - albeit not guaranteed.

I doubt that did much to answer your question.  The more I thought about it, the more I realised that I could write a complete book in order to do so properly.  So again, sorry if the short version doesn't help in the way that was needed.
