and 3 1/2 x 1 1/7?

Try changing these fractions to improper fractions.

That is: write 5 1/8 as 41/8 (you can do this by multiplying the bottom number of the fraction by the big number and then adding the top number number of the fraction, and put that all over the bottom number... 8*5+1=41... 41/8).

So we get 5 1/8 - 2 7/8 = 41/8 - 23/8

and then you just subject the top numbers...

41/8 - 23/8 = 18/8

and simplify...

18/8 = 9/4 = 2 1/4

For the second write them as improper fractions, but this time multiply the top of the first with the top of the second, and the bottom of the first with the bottom of the second. For example

a/b X c/d = ac/bd
