Help with Wireless router?

Question

I am currently on the internet with DSL from Verizon. I currently pay $20 per month of it.

If i buy a Wireless Router and set it up for my house, will they charge extra money from me? Will the monthly bill go up?

Will i be charged for using it with my PSP...?

If you don't buy it from them and don't tell them you have it, you won't be charged more money per month unless, they charge you for an over-usuage of bandwidth amount.  This is relatively a new charge so you'll probably be just fine.

nope the only thing you would have to watch for is if they have a set limit on your bandwidth used or some c**p but you PSP would hardly effect that

Make sure you don't already have a router...our Verizon service (and a friend's who had DSL) came with modem/router combinations.

If this gives you a Verizon admin login page, you have a router: http://192.168.1.1

Username: admin

Password is probably: password --or-- password1

You should have that from when they installed it though.

If you have a router that's wireless (it would have an antenna) just log in (Verizon can help you if that password doesn't work) and find out the SSID/Encryption key.  You're done.

If you have a router that's not wireless, you need a wireless access point.

Verizon doesn't seem to charge for extra computers/game systems and they'll probably help you get things connected via the phone.  Our installer said the only limitation is no more than 3 xbox 360's can be connected at once.  I had 3 computers hooked up when they came for our install and they didn't charge any extra fees.

If you don't have a router, I like the Belkin 54G router because it's the cheapest name-brand one I've found ($39 at most office stores) and I know it works (I've installed 3 of them) but the brand is really up to you.  Only one of those Belkins has gone bad, and Belkin replaced it for free.  I don't know if all routers include this but the Belkin one comes with a setup CD that guides you through plugging everything in correctly and automatically programs the router to work as well as guiding you through enabling security.

Put your wireless router as high up as you can and as far from electrical and metal things as you can, that'll give you the best coverage.  If you have 2.4GHz cordless phones you may want to replace them with 5.8GHz, 900MHz, or the new DECT6.0 phones that won't cause interference.  Also, wireless video senders, or wireless cameras that run on 2.4GHz should be set to the farthest channel from your router (e.g. set video sender to 1 or A and put the router on channel 11).
