  1. Realisation of why you are depressed

  2. First of all, have you seen a doctor? Don't just take these drugs without the supervision of a doctor.

Secondly how long have you waited? Prozac and the other SSRI antidepressants take two weeks, and sometimes longer, to take effect.

Do you know why you have depression? Is there a specific cause such as a bad job or girlfriend? If there is then try to resolve that problem. Never stay in a bad job.

Finally there are a number of different antidepressant drugs available, and many people find that if they don't respond to one, they will to another.

    good luck.

Edit: DON'T smoke a joint (cannabis). Cannabis sometimes causes depression and worse conditions such as schizophrenia.

  3. make sure you spend a lot of time with friends. go out with them as often as possible and have a laugh. it has really helped me with my depression - it takes my mind off things, and getting over 10 hugs in a day really helps to make you feel good! plus, going outside, particularly in sunshine, naturally helps to improve your mood.

also, do more exercise, as exercise increases endorphins, natural 'happy hormones'.

make sure you have 'me time', as stress can contribute to depression. give yourself time to relax and do something enjoyable, treat yourself and try to make yourself feel good. perhaps try something such as yoga or meditation, or just lie down and listen to some music.

try to reduce/resolve any factors that may be contributing to your depression.

  4. They say there's no such thing as a free lunch but when it comes to personal mental trauma,. I believe that all the expensive and dubious medications, expensive counselling and psychiatric referrals are all unnecessary.  The answer lies within you although you may not realise it. You have been the author of your depression and you, uniquely, can help yourself.  Some ideas :

    *   Give yourself permission to smile again and have a better day. No magic spell here but a daily positive thought can ease you up that recovery ladder

    *   Simply keep active ... push that body out of bed and shout at yourself to do something ... anything, even cleaning the house or car. Take walks, go window shopping, people watch in the parks or town centres. Anything to take your interest outside your inner sanctum

    *   Talk to people ... anyone will do ... friends or strangers. tell them how you feel and how you so cherish the thought of sunnier days ahead. Again, the simple repetitive concept of looking forward can help you up that psychological ladder.

    *   Write down your daily thoughts ... keep a blog ... look back on what you write yesterday, the day before etc and see if your thinking makes you think why you wrote what you did ..... it may well help you to realise that things are not so bad ..... and again this can have a cumulative effect.

    *   Learn how to smile again.  It can really help!  Good luck!

  5. Clonidine

helps restless, blood pressure and depression

trust me im on them and its amazing, its not a narcotic but its a long term pill. something i might have to take my whole life and im 23

side effects include (waking up as if you were in the dessert for 40 years) very dry mouth

  6. How about:

-Psycho-therapy? This is a special type of counselling that delves a bit deeper into the way you perceive things.

-Join a self-help depression group like AWARE.  These groups can put you in contact with people going through similar times and can give you support with this.

-Read self-help books on this area.

To be honest, I think most people go through this at some point or points in their lives.  They may not tell you or talk about it but it has been my experience so far.  Some friends of mine even hid this from me but later I discovered it.  Best wishes:-)

  7. Depression is something you have to learn to cope with.  I've had depression all my life and until just recently I was trying to end my life...

Now however something happened (not sure what) and I've learnt to deal with it.  It's not easy and sometimes it just gets you.  But I found counsilling terrible!  It made it worse in my opinion.

    Hope this helps. xx

  8. Smoke a joint.

  9. Alternative therapies.

  10.   There are many things you can do to help treat your depression.

Moderate exercise for at least 20 - 30 minutes, daily, and up to an hour. Brisk walking is good, and try to be mindful of the feeling your foot makes as it hits the ground: it is a relaxation technique. Also use daily, one of the relaxation methods in sections 2, 2.c, 2.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2.q, 2.o, and section 53, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris whichever works best for you.

Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Around 30% - 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements.

Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John's wort, (the strength varies, but the supplier should be using a standardised hypericin content, so follow the directions) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55 at ezy-build ).

Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy. Co-counselling is shown in the first 3 pages of section 2, or online therapy, or even talking with someone you feel comfortable with, and a much more detailed post on depression treatments is on page R.

  11. By singing or any kind of creative work you can slow down your depression. So try to busy yourself in a creative work either it is playing with children.

  12. Try self hypnosis, you can download MP3s (about $20), or buy a book and do it yourself. What you know you have to do is use those negative thoughts to work against themselves. Something that makes you down, instead causes you forget or triggers happier thoughts.

  13. don't give up.  it sometimes takes a long time to get things straightened out.  sorting out different issues is the first step.  why are you depressed?  what makes you happy, what makes it worse.  There are far more medications on the market that prozac, ask to try something else.
