Help with downloading music

The last time I did it, Napster was still free, and hadn't been sued. We just bought an HP, now how the heck do I download songs to make mix CDs? I need VERY detailed instructions, as I have Windows Vista, which I'm not really familiar with. What are some good sites to download from? And how do I do it?
