I have grown some purple sprouting broccoli and ever since then, in a few of my plants there has been purple stuff growing from the stalk and white flowers there. My grandmother and my friends grandmother think that they should be there but my mother is wondering whether to cut it off - should they be there?

  1. I am not familiar with 'purple' broccoli, but I am with regular broccoli. It is a 'brassica', and along with cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, ect. grows in cool weather. All these will "bolt", (flower and go to seed) in higher temperatures of the summer months. They are best grown in early spring or late fall. If your broccoli is producing flowers, and hasn`t produced a 'head' yet, I think it`s done for. The next couple of weeks is a good time to plant for fall harvest of these crops.

  2. srmainman is right, it's gone to seed and pretty much a lost cause. Try planting them from seed at the end of the month for a fall crop.
