I use a Champion Valkyrie for my drives. I used to use a DX Wraith. My drives are usually only around 150 ft to 200 ft tops. I am 14 yrs old and im not sure if its my stance thats wrong or its just because of my age. I use the X-Step by the way.

  1. Switching from the Wraith to a Valkyrie was a good move. The Wraith is for more experienced players with big arms.

If you stick with backhand drives then it's all about arm speed, wrist snap, and your grip. Stand at the front of the tee pad and work on the wrist snap and grip then when you start to feel comfortable with you throw then start working on adding your X-step into your drive.

Your grip should be similar to holding a pencil or spoon. Make our hand like you are holding pencil then put your disc in your hand while it's still in that position. Your thumb should be close to the rim on the top of the disc and your fingers should be curled comfortably under the rim of the disc.

Sidearm is good for beginners to get good distance but it's much more difficult to put good Hyzer and Anhyzer on the disc. So if you play straighter courses, this would be a good drive for you but if there are alot of trees and bends in the holes, stick with backhand.

(I think the second guy to answer this question didn't read the question very well at all)

  2. distance is all in leverage and wrist snap.  try to move your shoulder farther back in your backswingwith a lot of hip in it as well.  you should be facing the opposite of your target before you throwand then plant your leading foot and whip your body around it.  it takes time to sinc up everything, but speed is not the answer the leverage you creaate doesnt require speed the arms and body will take care of the distance, then you just have to figure out when to release the disk and your set

  3. Have you ever tried to throw side arm on your drives?

Sounds weird but I had a guy show me and I practiced it until I got a good technic.. I increased my drives by atleast 100 feet.

I hold my index finger like I am pulling the trigger of a gun...put it under the lip of the disc and then put my thumb on top of it, and throw the disc side arm... I can WING it that way.

I short chip and putt traditional..but tee off side arm.. you should try it and see if you increase your distance... takes some practice to come off straight, but you can get it.

  4. Sounds like you need to have a pro take a look at your swing.  Distance is achieved thru the use of your mid and lower body muscles.  Stance need to be correct but does not produce distance.   As for your age, there are a lot of 12 - 15 year olds  (boys and girls) in our club's junior league that consistently drive 250+ off the tee.

To get distance, the most important thing is the 'release' timing.   When you back swing, you basically are coiling your body and storing all that energy, on your downswing, if you max out the power early or late, you won't get the benefit and lose distance.  (assuming your swing is on plane).  Unfortunately, this is not something you can fix through couple words here.
