we got a new receiver, and i'm trying to find a way to hook our cable up to the receiver so cable will come in surround sound. is there any way to do this with basic cable. when i say basic cable i mean no box, just the cable wire coming into the tv set... there is no plug in and out for the cable wire on the receiver either.

  1. You can't, you will have to get a separate box to process the digital signal and 5.1 surround sound.  You can hook up the cable to a tv and then use the audio out to your receiver.

  2. what kind of tv do you have

some tv's have 2 rca audio out plugs red/white, it has to say audio out and not just in

    jvc tv's commonly have this

you can then go out from the tv into the receiver

  3. it's possible, because my dad has a kick-butt stereo system in the living room, and he can have the tv hooked up to the stereo and surround sound. the main thing is, though, that he has a really really nice reviever that allows a sort of input for the television. i'm not quite sure exactly how it's hooked up; i'm sure he has it hooked up to the VCR, but we don't have cable or satellite, so we have no box, and we can get regular tv through the stereo. like sometimes, if the CMA awards are on(my ma digs country), he'll put it onto the stereo for her. it all works out. the reviever he has is a Yamaha RX-V2095.  Try looking it up on www.crutchfield.com  or www.hometheatermag.com, or www.yamaha.com.
