Help with these two maths questions?

Multiply out and simplify

1. 17 + (m - 4)² + 2m

2. (2x + 7)(x + 3) - (x-2)(x-10)

1.17+(m-4)^2+2m=17+m^2-8m+16+2m=33+m^2-6...

2.(2x+7)(x+3)-(x-2)(x-10)=2x^2+6x+7x+2...

=2x^2-x^2+6x+7x+10x+2x+21-20=x^2+25x+1

1. first multiply (m-4)^2 to get m^2-8m+16.

now you have 17+m^2-8m+16+2m.

next collect like terms to get 33 + m^2-6m

last, put them in order to get m^2-6m+33

2. FOIL the first 2 binomials to get 2x^2+6x+7x+21.

next FOIL the last two binomials to get x^2-10x-2x+20

at this point we have 2x^2+6x+7x+21-(x^2-10x-2x+20).

it is important to put the last polynomial in parentheses because the negative sign will have to be distributed to the polynomial.

after distributing we get 2x^2+6x+7x+21-x^2+10x+2x-20.

next collect like terms to get x^2+25x+1.

    17 + m^2 - 16 + 2m

    = 1 + 2m + m^2
