Help with wireless internet?!!?

Question

I am looking to get the Internet at home finally ( I know, I know).

We do NOT have a home phone line (land line) - we have an older Dell computer that is slower than snot.

So, I realize my only option is to go wireless Internet, right??

How do I go about doing that? What are the best companies out there to go with and the best deals?

What equipment will I need to buy to set it up? What do I need to tell the companies I have when I call - just that I have no land line? What speed do I need for the Internet?

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Please type in simple terms, I don't understand all the computer mumbo - jumbo talk. Thanks!!

call cable company tell them you want basic high speed internet. go to electronic store and tell a sales man you want a router that supports wireless.

we'll deal with hooking all that up when time comes, but basically that's all you do

your best bet is to go with a highspeed internet: roadrunner, comcast, or verzion. You will need http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54GS-Wi... to send the connection out. and to plug into your computer you will need http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WUSB54GSC-... . the cable guys should set up your linkysys router, request for them to do so. then all you need to do is plug that little square usb looking thing into your computer and there you have it wireless high speed internet

Ok, first off, just because you don't have a phone line doesn't mean you have to go "Wireless", infact if you are using an old Dell desktop you are not going to be able to go wireless without purchasing more equipment than you need.  

Your best option would be to call the cable company that offers service in your area (Comcast, WOW, etc.) and have them hook up the internet connection to your house (typically runs around $60.00 a month).  They will lease you a modem which is what connects your PC to the internet.  

So basically, you will have a cable line run into your house which is then hooked up to the modem (small box with blinking lights).  Then, a network cable (otherwise known as a CAT5) will be plugged into the back of the modem and then run to your PC which will connect you to the internet.  It really is that simple!  

Now, if you want to go wireless because you have a laptop, you will need a router first off and considering you don't know anything about PCs judging from your post, I would get someone involved in setting this up to be sure it is secured correctly.  If your laptop is old, you are going to need a wireless card or wireless adapter, which will plug into the PCMCIA slot on the side of your PC, I think you can get a USB one too if you'd prefer that.  

Once you have connectivity in your house all you have to do is open internet explorer (or which ever browser you'd prefer).  If it doesn't work, then theres a configuration issue which is a whole different issue.

Get a Linksys wireless network adapter USB for your computer theyre like 35-50 dollars at walmart or on ebay for abuot 15-25 New. If you live in the city you could get the internet FREE with this card if someone in your town/city has a router on their computer. (a lot of ppl do these days) A friends does this and I helped him its EASY. email me if any questions thanks

You will need a landline, or a cable  tv connection. If you have neither of these you must consider a cellular or a satellite connection. Both of these are so expensive it would be cheaper to invest in a land line and dsl. Unlees there is a major wireless provider (this is NOT the same as normal wireless connections)  running wireless cells in your area (very rare) you have no choice.
