Hermann Hreidarsson feared career was over
Portsmouth defender Hermann Hreidarsson has admitted he thought his career was over after rupturing his Achilles tendon in a match against Tottenham in March. The Icelander has spent the
ensuing seven months attempting to rescue his career, and marked his comeback last Saturday, coming on as a late substitute in Portsmouth’s 2-1 win at Hull.
Despite revelling in his comeback, the former Charlton man admitted it had been a long journey to get back on the pitch. “It's great to be back and it's been a long time coming. When it
happened at the time, I thought the worst and that it could be the end. But I have worked very hard over the summer and had a good recovery over the past couple of months. The Achilles is fine now."
Hreidarsson is a huge fans’ favourite down on the south coast. His brief cameo appearance on Saturday was greeted with almost as a big a cheer as was afforded to Pompey when they scored
either of their two goals.
It’s a far cry from that horrendous day in March when Hreidarsson lay in agony on the White Hart Lane turf, with his career in tatters. He would go on to miss Pompey’s extraordinary run
to the FA Cup final, which he played a big part in up until the semi-final stage, and even looked like leaving the club with his contract up in the summer. But manager Steve Cotterill decided to hand the inspirational 36-year-old a new deal, and the player
can now look forward to re-establishing himself in the side.
The Icelander was quick to pay tribute to his team-mates outstanding recent form and admitted he faces a tough task forcing his way into the side.

“I need to battle my way back into the team, because the boys have been magnificent. " But with his lion-heart spirit, few would bet against him reclaiming his spot in the side, and endearing
himself even further to the Fratton Park faithful.
