  1. You created a little eco-system and they came.  There is probably nothing you can do, short of covering it. Birds get hungry too, but unfortunately they might eat all you fish.

  2. Well, we humans are the intruders, not the herons!

You can build a frame structure out of chicken wire to protect your koi and goldfish.

I do not know what your ponds look like, but every fish pond should have a ledge over the top corners of the pond so the fish have something to hide under.  Not that it will stop a heron from "fishing around" with its beak, they're pretty smart.

I wonder if you've ever considered indoor koi and goldfish ponds?  I remember a friend who had one built as a slightly raised ledge on the floor in the corner of their living room for their tropical fish, and a small window facing the living room, with an artificial waterfall coming gently down into it from the wall, it was really relaxing and even had small colored lights on the rock waterfall and in the water for nighttime!

  3. make your pond deeper, high rise, and netting.

  4. put up some netting asap.  That heron now knows where he can get an easy quick snack.  He'll wipe you out in a day if you let him.
