I will be starting High School in a week and I must admit I am very scared. For one, I haven't been to school in over a year because I didn't go to the 8th grade because I was very sick and like in the hospital, and like I know I won't be behind because I know what my curriculum will be like I will be doing geometry and I've done algebra one and even geometry already but like I'm wondering how hard it will be to get back into the "groove" so to speak. I was also wondering how hard high school is, what people wear and act like, and how to mange time. Also, I am going to be in the IB program so how hard is that, I mean even though I've already done like geometry and world history I will probably be doing a lot of stuff I haven't done and like since I haven't done home work in a year how hard will that be to get back into. Thnx

  1. I have taught high school for 10 years (about to start #11) and have found that my best students use a planner (little calendar) to write down your assignments to stay organized.

The IB program will be harder than the non IB program at the same school, but hardness between schools varies greatly.  The schools ABI will be a good indicator, if it is well over 900, it is a hard school.  Between 800 and low 900's, it is a good school, but manageable.

Find out if there is free tudoring on campus so that you can get clairification before you are lost or just drop in before tests for some extra reinforcement.

Look at the advertisments to see what most people wear.  There will be some who dress different - thrift store, all black, S****y, little kids department, sports jerseys, the list goes on.

  2. A lot of time, Jr. Highs/middle schools make it seem harder than it is. It's just like every other school. You do work, and if you listen and know the stuff it's easy, if you slack off and don't pay attention it is hard. Just try your best and it'll be ok. Also, your whole highschool you will be growing more mature, so it'll change your views from the time you get there till the middle and end :)

  3. How hard school is has everything to do with where you are attending school. Large, well funded schools in big cities tend to be more difficult than schools in smaller cities. Personally, I did not think high school was that hard. Some classes are a lot of work, but they are not hard. By a lot of work, I mean the amount of reading required in English can be intimidating at times as well as the amount of time it takes to complete math assignments. Usually, the only time classes are challenging is when you do not pay attention in class, fail to do the homework or take advanced or AP classes.

As far as time management goes, I do not think you will have a problem. The only reason I had a problem with time management was because I was president or on the board of several important clubs, like the drama board and Model United Nations. I was also in choir, debate, forensics and on a dance team. However, I still received a 3.98 GPA. The only class I received a B in was a math class, my freshman year, second semester, when I transfered schools in the middle of the school year.

Don't worry. High school is fun and rather easy. Once you get in college, like I am now, you will have less classes, but less time as well, because all of your classes will be as hard or harder than your easiest high school class.

  4. Do you still keep in contact with your elementary school friends?  I am sure some are willing to be there for you during your hard time.  From my experience in the eighth grade, everyone wanted to be friends with each other.  It is only later in the years where groups started to form, but some high schools have all grades befriending each other.

  5. Dont be afraid. I took all honors classes last year (freshman year) and I was just fine. With the whole thing about you getting back into the groove of things, that will just come naturally. (:

  6. just be chill

    and cool

  7. we"ll in high school some people are going to be really mean and some people Will be nice just be your self  and you"ll  be fine i am going to high school and my sister told me that .

  8. Well I would say just be yourself and dont worry about what others have to say. Do your best in school because it pays off just go with everything and you'll be fine.

  9. Ah! I feel for you. High school can be brutal. Hopefully your experience will  be better than mine was. One thing I wish I had realized back then is that at some point nearly everyone felt the way I did at times, worrying about fitting in, feeling self-conscious, etc. Being a teenager can be lonely and confusing. Most of the time the people who are mean to you have big problems of their own, and are more worthy of your pity than your fear or anger. I'm not saying it condones their behavior, but it's easier to shrug off someone's meanness when you realize they probably dislike themselves more than they actually dislike you. Also, when you're in high school sometimes it feels like it lasts forever, but in reality it's only going to be a brief period of your life and if it does suck keep in mind it's not going to last forever. Also, don't worry about being popular or fitting in. Almost without exception, all the "cool" and stuck-up kids from my school have amounted to very little. In particular one "cool" girl who was really mean to me in school had to bag my groceries and had to carry them out to the car for me, and I could tell she absolutely hated it. It was a nice moment.

In terms of school work. . . take good notes, make use of organization and highlighting to make the page easier to read. Follow a pattern for studying (picking a certain spot and time to study helps train your brain to be receptive when those conditions are met). If you are distracted by the TV turn it off when studying (I personally liked having it on, just for background noise). Figure out what type of learning methods work for you. If you're a visual learner, making diagrams and things may help. When I was having trouble remembering the parts of the brain for psychology I drew a diagram of the brain and then cut out strips of paper with the names on them, mixed them up, and practiced labeling them until I got it right. I did something similar for definitions and trying to keep track of the brain's neurotransmitters and their functions.

    Good luck!

  10. Have you been keeping contacts with your friends? Having at least that will get you back in the groove. Honestly, high school is probably less strict than middle school/junior high, but obviously the classes are more rigorous. At your school, you may have seniors who will be helpful to show you around (hopefully there's a program like that at your school). A lot of freshman will be as nervous as you upon entering high school, so you won't feel left out.

High school is a fun experience, don't worry too much.

  11. im sorry that you were in the hospital :[

i am also an incoming freshman so i cant give you real advice

    but dont worrry soo much

clothes and stuff dont worry about hopefully people that you meet dont judge you

just be yourself get involved in clubs and activities and you should do great

    good luck :]

  12. My advice:

    1. Get to know your teachers and listen to them. You get on their good side, chances are they can be lenient about homework

    2. Do your homework everyday. Even if it's not due the next day, get a start on it or even do it in one night.

    3. Keep a planner about what you have to do, when it's due, and any special details about it.

    4. Do your math homework first before anything else, but studying for a math test and any other tests should be done last.

    5. Introduce yourself to people and try have everyone at least know who you are.

    6. Have fun. Join some clubs, sports, maybe even start your own. If you don't have fun you'll end up like me.

  13. it wont be hard since u alredy no stuff

  14. You'll be fine, lol.

Try asking some of your friends how they manage their time and little tips to getting around the school quickly.

If you already know geometry and world history, you seem like a pretty smart person, so highschool won't be difficult.

As long as you try you'll be fine.

As for the IB Program, I have no idea what that is so I can't help you there. Sorry !

Just remember, have fun and relax !

    Good Luck !
