Highschool Volleyball?

Anyone on a highschool volleyball or were once on a high school volleyball team? I haven't really played volleyball much, but I fell in love with it at gym and I really want to play it at the highschool. I'm the best in my gym, but none of the kids really care or pay attention during volleyball. I can set, bump, and serve very well (except for overhand) and I have no idea how to spike. I wanted to know what you did during try outs for your volleyball team, why *you* think you made the team and any other tips. Can you please help me? I badly want to get on the volleyball team! (Tryouts are in August & if it means anything I am 14 and in 8th grade)

  1. See if your high school has a summer program. Find out if there are any summer volleyball camps. I went out for volleyball my freshman year without any experience except a little unorganized beach volleyball. I feel that i made the team because I was athletic, tall, and I had a good work ethic. Besides all that I had an older brother who played at that high school. Sometimes no experience is better, then the coach doesn't have to deal with bad habits, they teach you the right way from the get go. It will all depend on how advanced and competitive your school is and what raw talent you bring to the table if are not able to get any formal training before tryouts. In tryouts they might or might not give you any instruction on how to play, if they do make sure to listen and follow.

  2. well, taking your word for your abilities (i obviously have never seen you play), if i were you, i would really focus on passing. you could play libero if you are short. consider joining a volleyball club as a "practice player", you don't have to pay very much, if anything, and you get time to practice with people who already play and who could help you. generally, google and yahoo searches are sorted by distance from your current location (i don't know how the search engine knows). search "volleyball clubs" and see what comes up. sometimes, the practice schedule is posted so go to a practice and talk to the coach about being a practice player. volleyball is a fun sport to play, so try to play whenever you can.

  3. I am on a high school team right now, and have been for 3 years.

I think I made my team because I was determined, dedicated, knew basic skills, and coachable. That is basically what you should be, just show your coach what you can do and practice. If there are like summer open gyms, or volunteer practices that aren't mandatory but offered, show your dedication and go, individual help from others might help you.

    Work out over the summer.

My Coach has us do Jump-Plyo Training every other day in the summer.

    1. warm-up and run - 5 min.

    2. Calf Stretches- flamingo's, etc.

    3. 4 sprints- length of a basketball court

    4. Stretch everything

    5. Ankle hops 20 sec.

    6. 8 block jumps - block, 2 steps right, and block

    7. 15 pushups

    8. 30 situps/crunches

    9. Ankle hops 20 sec.

    10. 8 block jumps - block, 2 steps left, and block

    11. BREAK! 2 mins.

    12. 30 situps/crunches

    13. 15 pushups

    14. 4 sprints

    15. 50 controlled jumps - hit same elevated target (door frame, etc.)

    16. Ankle hops 30 sec.

    17. cool down stretches.

All of this takes about a half hour, as it gets easier to do increase the reps./time.

Do you have anything that you can hit over? like a swing set, clothes line, or shed. Something that is close or taller than net size could help you. A great thing you could do is that you can practice your control passing and setting to yourself. To work on setting control try going from standing to laying and back to standing all while setting the ball to your self.

To perfect your overhand try getting your toss perfect. if your right handed you want your left foot forward and you want your toss to land infront of your right foot and next to your left toes. then just practice hitting hard, hit the ball as hard and give it air so it could clear a net if it needed to, that way you can get you serve almost perfect and then just adjust it for the real court. And this will give you the running you need :).

I stand on my front porch and set and pass the ball to my self using my roof... that is only if your parents are nice like mine. I haven't broken anything yet :D. It helps to because you have to guess where the ball will be next. Of course whether you house is one story or two will depend on whether you can do this lol.

  4. First coaches want to see determination. Its not what you have its what you can become. I was on the hschool team and we did drills, dives, sprints, and leg toning.

Practice bumps, sets an spikes with a partner, and remember to get low! literally! To do a basic bump, technique is most important-- dont bend, squat and clasp your hands together tightly. Then, without swinging, get force from coming up from your sqaut which will drive the bal forward. Let the power come from the legs! As for sets, form a triangle with you hands out and in front of you. Again with your legs, squat, the thrust up. A perfect spike is all in the footing. One long step, two smaller, them  leap with one arm out in front and another pulling back then reaching around to smack.

Also try wall sits, at home. Take jogs to build stamina. Vollleyball may not seem intense, but it does require a lot of energy.

    Hope i could help!

  5. ok well what my school does is we have 2 a days which means we practice form 9-12 then 1-4.(note: this is 9-12 grade) the first couple of days are all basics like this is how you pass. we do like a thousand spike approches before we even get to hit the ball. then on the third day we have "tryouts" we do the shuttle run some weird agility drill, how many serves you get in and over out of 20, test your verticle, measure your height, situp in a minute pushups in a minute(as many as you can) a serve recieve drill and setting into the basket. that takes the morning 3 hours and we get put into teams after that. Our town is small so everyone makes a team. the coaches just put us with others with the same skill level. I moved up to varsity in 9th grade because I worked really hard and I communicated with my teammates. It all payed off because the next year I started varsity and we made it to state!

Just work hard and dont be afraid to do a little extra like run an extra sprint after practice. Coaches love that stuff!

  6. I have been playing volleyball for four years, and i'm a freshman in highschool. When I tried out for my first school team in 7th grade, (I played club in 6th) I remember being so nervous, because they're were so many girls trying out. First things first  is you have to stand out. I remember my older friend told me to wear a tye die shirt because then coaches will notice you if its out of alot of people. Also listen to the coach, and always shag the balls and be quiet when they talk. Plus it doesn't hurt to suck up a little bit :). Obviously you have to have some potential, so practice everyday during the course of tryouts and try and get a friend to help you. You also might want to get your overhand serve down too...it's pretty important. Make sure the coach also sees you trying your hardest and slamming the floor, and that you would make a good team mate. If they try and help you, MAKE SURE YOU DO IT! If that means changing something up then just do it, whether you agree or not !
