  1. Any  quality  coin  shop  will  give  you  sound  advice  and  if it's  rare  enough  will  make  you  an  offer, assuming  that  isn't  what  you've  hoped it's  worth then  you  could  offer  it  up  for  sale  on  E,bay  anyway  BoL....   ;-)   ;-(   ;-)   ;-)

  2. If its a sov, half sov or guinea it may have some value but nowhere near what you'll expect.Try Brittish Museum for appraisal if your not selling.

  3. 1801 coins may be valuable or not, depending on country, date, denomination, and condition - and most importantly, supply and demand.

If you're most comfortable bringing these coins to a dealer for evaluation, the venerable old coin dealer, Spinks, has an office in London:

In one or two other YA answers, members based in the UK have had only praise for Spinks: they've felt they were fairly dealt with.

If you'd like to look up your coins online - and these happen to be old British coins - try this guide to UK coin values:

Note that values for these coins start at the British grade "Fine", which is for coins that have most of their fine detail present, with wear only on high places.  One guide to grading British coins:

Also, as noted, this guide provides retail prices - what a dealer might charge customers in their shop - not what you might receive by selling to a dealer or to a private party (e.g. on eBay or otherwise).

  4. You don't say where the 1801 coin is from, whether it is base metal or silver of gold.

The link below will take you to the Royal Mint website and lots of links associated with the Royal Mint.
