Hockey helmet strap length?

what is the distance allowed between skin and strap?

There is not set value, but it must be secure enough to keep the helmet in place.

I have never been too sure on this even though I have played the game for many years. Obviously if you're in a checking league you want it to be a bit tighter, although it won't be as comfortable. It's usually the ref's call.
