  1. Here is a video saying that just plain vinegar will work fine

Vinegar - it removes moisture. When sprayed on plant foliage, the water in the leaves is drawn out, and the top growth of the plant is killed. Whether or not the root is killed depends on the type of plant and its maturity. As a home made weed killer, vinegar will have limited application, and will require that valuable plants be protected.

Salt - It may be added to some recipes to kill the plants when vinegar alone won’t. It will get rid of your weeds, but also anything else nearby. It will hang around, leaving you with long term difficulty when you want to grow desirable plants.

Soap - The soap added to these formulas for homemade weed killer is primarily to improve the absorption of the spray. Liquid dish detergent (not dishwasher or hand soap) is the most effective at this. Soap is able to break down the cuticle or waxy surface found on many weeds

Citrus oil, orange and lemon oil, and similar products are acidic. They would have the same effect as vinegar. They would be a lot more expensive. If they are considered by some to work better, it may be partly from the oil factor.

  2. it is true and it works well.

  3. If you can buy stronger vinegar than what is typically sold at the grocery store, you'll have better luck. You can find stronger vinegar at some garden centers or farm and feed stores.

I have nasty Bermuda that likes coming up in my rock patio. I pour vinegar over this IN THE MORNING and then let the heat from the mid-day sun help kill it. I also pour boiling water over it and use a steamer on it.  None of this helps completely so picking is what I finally resort to. But the vinegar and sun does help contain it somewhat.

In other areas of  my garden, I wouldn't want vinegar because I grow vegetables and fruit in every possible nook and cranny.  Vinegar would leach over into the spots where I grow food and I can't let that happen.  I mulch heavily in those spots.

A flame weeder might be a good idea for you.

Last week I tossed together a quick page about weeds.

    You might find it helpful.

Also, I find Peaceful Valley to be a good company for supplies.  I don't get any consideration for you visiting the page. I just think its a good company.  At the very least, you can see what else is available.

  4. Yes, vinegar works very well.

One thing I do is solarize my soil.  I place a large dark plastic tarp on my yard and fasten it down with large rocks.

After a few weeks in this Arizona heat all the weeds are dead and the soil's gotten so hot even seeds a few inches deep have burned to death.

This is time-consuming, sure, and it kills EVERYHING under the tarp, but once removed the soil is uniformly free of weeds and ready for cultivating.

You can also try superhot water on the weeds.

As with all things homegrown, these remedies are short-lived unless you do daily weed control.

Weeds are like annoying ex-lovers; they keep coming back when you least want them to.

  5. It works extremely well but remember it will kill your other plants as well so if you use it make sure you only use on the weeds. I only use it on the stuff that comes up on the sides of my concrete steps and in the cracks.
