Home school for a 4yr old?

Question

I'm in a situation right now where i have to take my daughter out of her current preschool and put her in another one but haven't found one yet. I might not put her in any preschool and just wait until she starts kindergarden in Sept. Haven't decided yet but in the meantime, i don't want her to loose any learning time, so what can i do at home to teach her what they teach her in preschool? i need fun ideas too.

She already knows her numbers from 1-10 and recognizes them,

colors shapes she knows

letters she recognizes some, so i'll help her with that...

Your state should have some guidelines according to each subject and grade.  In Texas we have the TEKs which is how we develop our curriculum.  Everything we teach needs to be based on the TEKs.  She needs to be counting by the end of kindergarten up to 100.  Also, you can work on counting by 10s, 2s, and 5s.  Work on letters and their corresponding sounds and make sure to take them out of order.  Also, work on her reading level and sight words.... like, is, they, the, etc.

It is not developmentally appropriate for a four-year-old child to be filling out worksheets or workbooks.

You can ask the public school where your child will attend Kindergarten for a list of skills they would like your child to know before starting.

A four-year-old child should spend most of her time playing — play is how she learns. Limit screen time (TV and computer), read aloud to her every day, let her help you with household tasks, go out into the community and talk about what you see. Let her entertain herself some of the time.

Use any interests she has as a jumping off point for selecting library books, taking "field trips", etc. Make sure she has art-making materials — paper, pencils, markers, tape, clean recyclables for buildling.

Help her learn about whatever interests her.

We do the "Learn to Read" preK edition.  That has everything...flash cards, letter books, computer cd with letter games all to coincide with the lesson they are learning.  

We play "I spy" with beginning letter sounds.  We do math with M&M's and that's his treat when we're done.  Obviously he really likes that!  We read, read, read chapter books.  1 chapter (or more if he's in the mood) at nap time and 1 at bed time.  We just finished Spiderwick Chronicles and are currently reading the Captain Underpants books 1-5.  

Oh,  We do the Learn to Read everyday and I bought a letter writing book for him to practice writing the letters that are in the lesson.  We also color, color, color because it gives them terrific control of their writing.

try teaching her like 2 plus 2 or 3 subract one. to show her thats fun use fun things that she likes.

there is alot of books about pre-k and other grades.  buy some of those books they sell them in book store or go to staples.Teach her those things and if she or ready knows  

get the kindergarden.

Don't worry about "teaching " her. She will learn if you read to her, take her interesting places in your community, have lots of time to talk about what she is doing and seeing and make sure she has paper, markers, crayon, glue and other interesting Art materials. Give her a place to work and spend time creating. She'll be fine.

These things actually do help help them learn. i am in child development in a high school and i use that website all the time to think of lesson plans for the kids, and it is fun and you can tell they are learning, i totally recommend it!!

Practice cutting skills. You can find books for this or just draw on construction paper and have her cut on the lines. Basically you will want straight lines, curvy lines, zig zag lines and basic shapes.

Coloring-buy some coloring books and help her stay in the lines. This isn't for art reasons, it builds the fine muscles in her fingers to help her in writing.

Writing- find out what system your local system uses, mine uses D'nealian which is a pain since it adds "tails" to all the letters. Buy some workbooks and only do about a page a day.

Math- patterns, shapes, sorting, knowing the actual value of the numbers, Count to 100, count to 20, count backwards from 10. These are basic things my school system wants them to know before kindergarten.

Starfall.com has activities for learning to read and other preschool activities. Start working on sight words, you can buy flash cards for 3 bucks at Barnes and Noble. We put up 10 every week or until she has learned them all. These are words she is just going to have to memorize since they make up 50-75% of all stories.

Letter Factory by leap frog is a good way of teaching letters and the sounds they make. My daughter has known them since age 2.

There are a lot of good answers already. Just be sure you daughter has times with friends. Maybe a play-date with one other child and other times time with several children. Social is very important at this age. Even a swim, dance or gymnastic class to follow a teacher instruction and have cooperation time with other children.

Preschools now and days are excellent and highly accredited. They all have to meet certain measures and requirements before the child enters kindergarten. I recommend you get the criteria and work from your childs preschool in order for you to homeschool on your own. That way your child will be up to par
