  1. If the free wifi is inconsistent, then you're probably too far for a good connection, or whoever owns it turns it off when they're not using it.

To set up your own, you need to get a broadband connection (cable, dsl, fios) from an internet provider in your area.  Cable companies and phone companies tend to bundle it with other services for the best price.

You'll get a modem from your provider.  If it doesn't include a wireless router (and most don't), then you'll need to get one of those.

Then you create a local network following the router instructions.  (Modem to router, setup wireless network on router, secure with passphrase.)

Then you discover your wireless network on your computer, select it, put in the passphrase, and go.

  2. You can connect your computer to the free network.

You can also buy your own internet and just request a wireless router from them. You can get a non-wireless modem from them, buy a wireless modem, and plug them into eachother.

  3. The best way is to get your own Internet Service Provider - they'll provide everything you need for a fast, stable and secure wireless setup. Free wifi is great, but totally insecure.

  4. This might help, if thats what you mean:
