Question:

Honest question for NFL fans?

How do you feel about the fact that NFL games are being shown on so many different nights? Personally I think the thing that used to set Football apart from other sports was the fact that you had to wait a whole week to see a game. I think the amount of televised games available now is overkill and makes the NFL no different then baseball and basketball season. There is no anticipation for that big game so to speak. Couple that with NFL Live and NFL Network and you have football 24/7. I grew up idolizing Dan Marino and I would literally pray that the Dolphins would be on NBC the following Sunday, now I just click my Direct TV remote and watch any game I want. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but the "magic" and uniqueness of the NFL seems to be gone. I think older fans in their 30's and up can probably relate.

Thoughts from NFL fans of all ages are greatly appreciated.

  1. Maybe you should just watch one channel on Sunday then. Don't let me catch you watching a Thursday night game (only a few per season). I guess it's still ok for you to watch Monday Night football if you can put up with the ESPN brodcasters.

You said that you used to pray that the Dolphins would be on NBC? Well now your prayers have been answered since you can click your Direct TV remote.

Are you saying that you don't like football coverage? If you are a football fan, how can that be?

  2. It has it's upside, as well as it's downside. With the expansion, it's necessary to spread out the games. However, with the fact that people generally work during the weekdays, it's harder to try and view a game on a Thursday evening. Also, having 2 games on a Monday night? My team plays on Monday night and won't start till 7:15 pm. That means it won't end till after 10. Longer if it goes into overtime. By the time I get home and to bed, it's after midnight and then I have to get up early to get ready for the next day. I also think it's wrong of the NFL to play regular season games overseas and deny the USA from seeing the match-ups live. Many American fans had to be taxed in order for the stadiums to be built. If we had to pay for it, we should be able to watch them, not turn the NFL (NFC, AFC) into NFL EUROPE! We have that already! They are cheating the American fans.

  3. If NFL football were on 7 days a week, I'd watch NFL football 7 days a week over any other sport or program on TV personally.

Yeah, there's something to be said for knowing that the NFL is on on Sundays and once on Mondays, but since I can't possibly watch 14 games every Sunday I like the fact that I CAN see games on days like Thursdays (or 2 on Monday nights early in the season) that I wouldn't be able to see otherwise.  Without paying $300+ per year to get the NFL "gameday package" (or whatever it's called this year...?) on Dish Network to see all 15 games every week, having the NFL on Thursday nights and 2 games on Monday nights seems like a pretty economical compromise to the average viewer IMO.

  4. Personally I love the fact that you can get football all the time. It's the only thing I have to look forward to all year summer long.

  5. no way more nfl is always a good thing----ive been a season ticket holder for 11 seasons so i am always away from the tv for at least 8 games a year while i am tailgating and cheering on the bolts so to me the more games they show on non traditional days i love----the only thing i dont like is that time warner wont pick up the nfl network so i have to go to a buddys house to watch the thursday night games

  6. I think its great that you can watch more football.

I'm out in Cleveland, and i'm a Broncos fan, and if it wasnt for being able to turn on Direct TV and watch the games I would never be able to watch their games at all.

So I think its good that we are able to watch more games now

  7. It is called progress. I have seen every superbowl . I know what you are saying. I used to long to see my team and it was special when I did..Being a Steeler fan from Florida made it difficult. After having dolphins and then bucs and now jags fed me on a regular basis.I prefer it this way. I get to see every Steeler game.Thats a good thing.

  8. I see your point.  But as a Steelers fan who has been transplanted out of state, the more games on TV, the better my chances of getting to watch them are.

  9. The big game you speak of is still your Fav. team, and they only play once a week.  They could go to seven nights a week in our home, that would be better than watching desperate housewives, and the other c**p they put on tv now.

  10. I like it spread out a little. It's still nowhere near baseball and basketball. Each team only plays 16 regular season games compared to 82 in basketball and 162 in baseball. Besides, most of the games are still only on one day anyway. In the first week, last week, and thanksgiving week, there are games on days other than Sunday or Monday. However, all the other 14 weeks are completely on Sunday, besides just one monday night game.

  11. I myself personally enjoy being able to watch football on so many different days as I live in the Bay Area and come Sunday all I get to watch is the Raiders losing and the Niners getting blown out.  It's nice to see a different team playing every now and then which is the luxury that comes with Thursday, Sunday, and Monday night games.

  12. It's good there's multiple nights of football. It's the most watched TV show. If I have to sit through more baseball games, I'd slit my wrist. Baseball doesn't deserve to be on TV every firckin day. At least football gives an excitement more than just twice a week now. You can only mull over the same games for so long, and it gives fans a chance to watch other teams they wouldn't normally watch. Because you only get three choices on a Sunday.

Downside from a playing and coaching prespective is timing, if you play on a thursday it will throw your cycle off. So on Thursdays you may not see the best a player can offer.

There hasn't been too many spectacular individual performances on Thursday Night football.

  13. I agree sundays and superbowl is all I need

  14. Actually, I think its a step forward. Being a Viking fan in Colts territory, if the games were only shown on Sundays, I'd hardly ever see their games.Even when the Colts are playing a 4:00 game, at the earlier game, they will show a Bears game or Bengals but hardly ever a Viking game.  With Thursday and Monday night games, at least I can watch them a little more frequently.

BTW, I'm 51 so I'm in the 30+ group definitely.

  15. people generally compare the NFL to the MLB in that, while baseball is america's pasttime, the NFL is americas love child.

analogies aside, i think it depends more on which team you support and where you live.  being a Steelers fan in a predominantly redskins area, its hard to get any games on TV, so it doesnt bother me much.

  16. Nah, I like that football is available more regularly...you can never have enough football...
